Default OT: VAT on used auto parts?

Here's a question that I hope someone over in Europe can answer. Is the VAT applied to used auto parts shipped over the the UK from the US. I have a bunch of my 944 stuff up on eBay and someone from the UK emailed me about shipping the part over to him. I told him that I could, but didn't know about the VAT.

I posted this on this board because there seems to be a greater UK presence here.

TIA

vat is a uk thing , so you do not charge it if you are in usa .

make declaration at customs that all charges to be paid by reciever .
these will be import duty , at 4.5% i think , then vat at 17.5% .

the import duty and vat is charged on the total ammount you value the goods at on the customs declaration , plus shipping / insurance costs ( the total ammount you been paid !! )

unless , it is a business sample to a uk business ,

or the declared value is less than $30.00

Overhere in the Netherlands there is no VAT on used parts. They call it 'marge deal'.

So, if I sent a used auto part to a person in the UK and on the customs form declare it as a gift with a value of $50, the recipient would get charged 17.5% VAT on it?

if it was $50.00 + shipping , customs would add 4.5% import duty to your total (after converting to sterling at that days rate) , then charge 17.5% to that total .

whereas a gift valued at say $50.00 including shipping may not be charged !!!!

doug hanson (the great man that he is) sent me some speakers over late last year , i didnt get charged , maybe it was the christmas spirit !!

Ian,

Since you seem to be the UK representative here, I sold my Strut Brace to a 951 owner over there. Anyway, it went for $170. Shipping via USPS Parcel Air is $45 w/insurance. So the authorities will put a 17.5% duty on an item declared as a second hand auto part? Is there anyway I could cut this guy's post-auction csts? TIA.

put the value at $10.00

so total is $55.00

only just over the £30.00 limit , so they will probobly let it go through

(it might even go through at full value declared , but thats the risk)

thing is , the insurance will only be valued at $10.00 , so on the very small chance something goes wrong , your buyer will be out of pocket .

personally , i would take the risk , usps are very good

How can they charge Value Added Tax (VAT) on something like a used part, that has lost most of its value? Don't they owe me the money for the value lost? Enough stupid questions for today!

The easiest way is to assume that in the UK, they tax everything.

I've always thought the biggest rip off was that we get taxed on the interest our savings make (don't know if you guys in the States do?). So - we get taxed when we earn it - we stick some of it in a savings account - and at the end of the year, we get taxed on it again. Hmmm - that seems fair.

taxes and car forums dont mix !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

taxed on the wages we earn
taxed on our savings
get taxed when we use our savings to buy the car
get taxed to use it on the road
get taxed on the insurace we pay to use it
get taxed on the fuel
get taxed on the oil
get taxed on the spare parts
get taxed on the garages costs

etc. etc. etc.

seems we cant even think about a car without being taxed on it !!!
