I am replacing one of the air con pipes to the compressor due to a leak, and while I do that I also want to replace the receiver / dryer. Adrians book says that if mine has the pipe entering at right angles then it's the same as Honda used between 88-91 - which cost $20 in 2001.

I've checked, and mine is one of these. When I called for a price from an independent Porsche parts supplier, I was quoted £140 - but they would do it for £115. However, I'm thinking I would rather buy it from Honda for much less.

Can anyone (Adrian?) - tell me the Honda part number I need, or which Honda cars used the same receiver / dryer? I know someone who works at a Honda garage so I shouldn't have too much trouble getting it once I know the part I want.

I cannot find the reciept from when I had the work completed. If nobody responds with the part number...let me know and I'll call the place that did the work and try to get it.

From what I remember...the shp had to pull the old part out and take it right to the honda parts counter. When we ordered the part based on the part number that the factory spec'd...the fittings were wrong.

If you lived in the U.S.A., you could get the drier/receiver for just under $50 from Vertex. Not quite as cheap as the Honda part (whatever it might be), but way below OEM. Perhaps you have a Vertex-type vendor in the UK? Or, if you strike out the Honda part, I imagine Vertex might ship to the UK for around $20 (or less) if you're not in a hurry--it doesn't weigh very much.

I just replaced the receiver/drier in my '89 C4 with part no R1040-89421 from

The drier is from 4-seasons and they list the same part number as a replacement for an 1989 Honda Civic 1.5 DX/LX 4dr.

So it is fairly likely that a drier for an '89 Civic would work.

Thanks. I just took a look at that web site - and it looks like CRX and Civic use that part number, and the fittings do look like they are in the correct place in the picture. I checked the Accord part as well - and that clearly isn't the right one, and the prelude one doesn't have a picture.

So - I will see how much that part is from Honda, or from a non-Porsche parts supplier here.

When you replaced it - what did you buy in the way of o-rings? I just called Porsch-Apart and asked them to get me some o-rings, but they said it's a bit more complicated and I might need a flange and a gasket as well. I looked at my receiver / dryer on Sat and it just looked like 2 pipes attached at the top, so I expected just o-rings for those.

I bought an upgrade kit made by Castrol (part no. 7246). It came with O-rings, R12 to R134A adapters and some Ester oil. Next time I would just get the O-rings without the kit.

I replaced the two o-rings on the pipes going into the receiver-drier (7.5 x 1.8mm). I also replaced the two o-rings just above the drier (17 x 1.8mm and 7.5 x 1.8mm) as it looked like they had been leaking.

For reference the part numbers (from PET) for the O-rings are:
999 707 252 40 (17 x 1.8 or 2.0mm)
999 707 247 40 (7.5 x 1.8 or 2.0mm)

Note they list the same part number for the 1.8 and 2.0mm O-rings the 1.8 were used prior to '93. I am not sure if it makes much of a difference.

Here is a tip for anyone in the UK who wants to replace their receiver / dryer. I haven't managed to get a quote from Honda - so tried ordering from 911autoparts, but that failed for reasons which aren't worth going into here (not their fault though).

I finally managed to find 4-seasons in the UK here :

And here's the best (and surprising bit) - the receiver / dryer cost me £19 (would have been £15 if I was a company). This compares to £115 + vat I was quoted for the Porsche part from independents.

Ah, life is never simple......

The receiver / dryer turned up today - but it's the wrong one (pipes are opposite each other, not at right angles). And the one I do need (part number 33821) - they don't have in stock, and they don't have it in France either. They checked with the States - and were told carriage would be about £75. Which seems a bit high to me.

So - looks like I will be trying to order it from the States myself (hopefully will have more luck this time) - but if carriage is £75 then I will just go and buy the part from Porsche!

Well, I ordered from a place called Importec - they list the same 4-seasons part number but were 5$ cheaper. So - $40.95 for the part and....... $46.50 postage (UPS). Obviously this is less than ideal - but it still brings the total to only $87.50 - which is only about £50 (although I guess I run the risk of another £10 or so in dodgy import tax). Still less than half the price of Porsche so I guess it's worth it - but I suspect it won't arrive this week.

Actually....... since the air con switches in when you select the windscreen demister..... and since the receiver / dryer's job is to remove moisture from the air.... and since I just drove home in the p****ing rain unable to see where I was going due to misty windows..... I think it is an essential item.

Not that I'd expect RS people to know that. Do you even have windows?
