Default daily driver?

How many of you use your 964 as a daily driver?
Are they real reliable for the daily grind?

I ask because I'm currently looking at an '89 C4....it may have to eventually take the place of the WRX, from a financial stand point.
I really liked the one I looked at,doesn't seem to have any issues except the clutch($$$). I realize maintainence costs are a little higher but.....

thanks

Well, I don't use my 964 as a daily driver as it's set-up for other fun

I do use my 993 as a daily driver and couldn't be happier. It's great fun to drive and that more than ofsets a bit more for routine maintenance for me.

Jay-

I have used my '91 C2 as a daily driver for the last 2 1/2 years. If I didn't have the ability to fix the little things and one or two bigger things, I think I would resent it. But, it has been utterly reliable as far as starting up and not leaving me stranded. The only times I got close to being stranded was because I used an aftermarket O2 sensor and it shorted out in the rain. Otherwise, it is a thrill each day driving it to work....

Jay,

I can claim that I have used my C-2 as my daily drive. I do not use it when it is very wet and very hot though.
I like to take my C-2 to work and I enjoy the ride more than my work.
The round trip is almost 100km and it normally takes about 75 minutes to 60 minutes depending on the traffic, I enjoy every single minute of it!

Cheers!

Eddie

Any 15 year old car is going to have occasional issues, but I don't see why it would not serve quite well. I keep a Mercedes 300 E beater a a back-up, but my 92 C2 is about a 50% daily driver. The only issue was a broken AC belt that also took out the alternator belt. I could have driven until the battery died, because the cooling fan is on a separate belt, and that survived. I still would want a back-up to use, because maintenance outages can take a week or two to get accomplished on a DIY basis.

Mine is a DD, too. Since I'm pretty inexperienced at DIY, I tried to find a car that was very uptodate on maintenance and will allow me to learn the repair and maintenance tasks one at a time -- I don't know if the strategy will work, but the car is fantastic and I've been averaging a bit under 1000 miles/mo.

Like you I live in New England and plan to get a something else for during the snow season.

You have a PM. Joe W.

I use mine as a daily driver. As a daily driver, maintenance costs can be higher because of more frequent oil changes and 15k valve adjustments. But the thrill of driving it everyday is worth the extra cost.

My C4 cabrio is a daily driver - huge update/upgrade from my 65 911 that used to be my daily driver!! And that thing has a cage in it! If you do your own work, the maintenance is cheap - oil changes and valve adjustments are easy once you get the hang of it. And I love driving it. Just goosing the gas always brings a smile! And I only drive 4 miles to the office, on non-freeway roads. reliable as heck!

I must admit that I try to keep it under 50mph to keep the spoiler down... yet I still have a blast...

well.... if i do get the C4 the WRX may have to go, so that means it'll be subjected to New England winters unless i find a cheap beater. during the summer it will split time with the barely legal 951.

The Can is a daily driver with 160k on it. My 83 911 SC was a DD as well (175k) but had 17" C2 wheels that made it stiff over frost heaves etc. The C2 is a blast to dirve but I do pull it during the winter in favor of a 4wd. I bought the C2 with higher miles as I have been doing this for years after a thorough PPI; IMHO the Germans have built cars that really go the distance. An aquaintaince has an 83 911SC with over 325k on it! The C2 has 16" P7000's that make it a comfortable road car that handles great. Get used to guys in everything from mini-vans to Vettes trying to take you off the line.

If you go for a C4 over a C2, it will be fine in the winter, so long as you have some decent winter tyres mounted on it.

If you're planning on using one for a daily driver, forget about looking at cars that only have low mileage as there is no point buying a low mileage car (and paying the premium for it) and then just racking up lots of miles. You might be better off looking at a car with more miles, one that has all the stuff fixed. It should be a bit cheaper. The money you'll save should go towards the extra maintenance that you'll have to do by using it as a DD.

Good Luck!

ride height would be an issue if it snows alot in your parts of the town.

My '90 C2 is used every day ran or shine. Made sure the car I bought had a specialist / OPC service history and top end overhaul done. No problems other than correcting a badly fitted immobiliser. Last car was a Subaru Impreza Turbo and the Porsche is every bit as reliable even though it is 11 years and 80,000 miles older. More fun too.

just got back from driving and checking out the C4.....far from perfect but that is 0k to me.stone chips galore, 94,XXX on the clock. fires right up no problem but of course i'll be doing all the ignition bits anyway,clutch/flywheel,front wheel bearings, brakes, small oil leak(but i expected that). the seller is willing to work with me on the price based on all these factors.so it may be a great deal or i may end up with someone elses headache....but i do want to rescue this car.
so look for my future name to be nine51/64

jay
BTW- it may be so affordable that i can swing keeping the WRX. then reliability won't be much of an issue.

How do you like your WRX? I'm actually considering a STI for the track.
