Default damper problems or not?

Recently I changed the springs on my 89 C4 for H&R's as the previous owner had lowered the car by simply winding everything down. Although the car was stable at high speed the ride quality destroyed the vertibrae over anything other than glass paper.

Now the car sits correctly on the road (previously the front end sat too high) and is much more forgiving over English roads.

Here's the problem. Even though the geometry was set by Porsche GB post-new springs, when I dial up speed the car just doesn't inspire confidence anymore, instead it begins to feel like a 'bouncy castle'.

Milage is now up around the 60K mark and I am begining to assume that after a period of being wound down, the shocks (which are factory standard) have given up.

My dilema is: Do I replace the shocks (if this is the problem) or is there something else I should be looking at?

Anyone out there suffered similar problems?

I replaced the shocks after having similar symptoms. The difference was nothing short of miraculous.

Sounds like shocks to me, as well. My C2 is in need of same at 65k miles. It rides and feels fine up to around 90 mph; feels loose and floaty above that speed.

... as long as the alignment guys did their job correctly! Alignment can do the same thing.

My original shocks lasted about 60k miles.

The car began to feel uneasy about fast cornering.

And so did I!

Another thing I found was, the trailing arm bushes being worn can appear to make the car feel really bouncy ... Also, Does your car feel like its tram lining or diving inot corners, a telltale sign of the bushes being worn, I did a DIY job on the trailing arms a couple of weeks ago and I cannot express how happy I am with the handeling now. It feels like a different drive completely.

Hope this helps
Regards
