Ordered my Aero Mirrors today (finally)! I got them for a very reasonable $379 plus S&H ($400 total) from MSRoad&Race, however I'm not sure what painting them should cost. I called a local shop and he quoted $150 which doesn't sound too bad however I'm sure someone here stated $50 was more in line?
Any thoughts?

Thanks for the input! I probably wouldnt ask, but I just hate calling for quotes and being asked "what type of car?" before an unconvincing pause after you say "a 911" then a quote that always seems on the high side!

Hi Howard,
Congrats on the new mirrors. It's a definitely a good move in the looks department for an early 964.
The new mirrors probably come apart ( base separate from mirror, motor, etc.) That's how they should be painted also so that no seams, tape lines are showing. If this is your case, then figure out how the mirror goes together, because after a fresh coat of paint, you don't want to mar the finish when you're trying to compress the spring.
A long time ago there was a post on the required tools to use to assemble/disassemble these mirrors, but it's no longer in the archives.
Let me know if you need a pic of this setup, because I have the tools left over from my mirror upgrade.

Mojo, a pic is always very, very helpful and welcome - Thanks! I HAD actually wondered about the threat of damaging the paint job during assembly. Is it something where a lot of pressure is required to put the pieces together (more chance of a mishap if so)?
I know Phil Raby had a post containijng his step-by-step for attachment to the car but I think I got the magazine issue with it in, plus its on John. M's site I believe. I dont remember if this had the assembly instructions? I'll take a look!
Thanks for the advice.

The link that Jason gives is a good source for what you have to do to compress the spring. It's the first time for me to see that site and the tools that I mention are different, but the theory is the same. You need some sort of mechanical advantage to make this work, be it screw or clamp.
I can't take credit for the below tools....another member offered this solution to me a few years ago.
The red component in the first picture is a 1/2" length of 1 1/4" copper tubing with a washer taped to one end. The clamp mounts to that and the mirror bolt moves up inside it while the force is transmitted to the mirror housing. The other side of the clamp is pushing on a custom fabricated hex head bolt that engages the bottom of the mirror bolt. Once the spring is compressed and the dogs are raised above the locking sections inside the mirror housing, you need to rotate the mirror bolt by gently tapping with a drive punch the ears on the mirror bolt from the bottom side of the mirror base. Doing a dry run without spring you can get an idea of what it involves.
The clamp is a wide throat C clamp by "Adjustable" clamp model 1434 and can be bought at any Ace Hardware store, though my local Ace had to special order it. I live in N. Cal so if you guys what me to send this setup to you email me at my911targa@***.net

Got the mirrors back this afternoon. Quick question - does the top of the mirror bolt simply twist so the 3 prongs are on the flat part of the housing? no nuts or fasteners?
Also, what are the funny threaded bomerang pieces for? LOL!
Boggiano....OUT!!!!!!!!
