Hello Mal,

Conversion of your dollars to our dollars suggest $65 K "Oz" is $44 K USD.

For this kind of $ you could possibly find two 964's here, and certainly a wonderful 993. I've seen really sweet 964's here $25-30 K USD, and bought mine seven years ago for $30 K USD.

Several years ago I shipped a car from Baltimore to Liverpool for almost nothing as it was one of the Jaguar transporters going home empty. Any idea what it costs to ship from the UK to Perth?

A google search suggests a price of 790 pounds to ship from the UK to Sidney for a Porsche.

Does anyone know if there are significantly more 964's RHD in the UK ?

If so, perhaps a two week holiday to the UK might be justified. :--)

There are certainly quite a few around, and you would be looking at about £18K for a good one. According to the currency converter I just used that's about 47K Australian dollars - which would make it well within your budget.
But, I have a feeling I've seen posts from Adrian saying that the chances of importing a car into Australia are almost nil - I'm sure he said if he went back, he wouldn't take his with him for this reason.

Hmmm.....a wonderful theory slain by an ugly fact.

I wonder if the import restrictions are pollution controls or safety related or both.

Does any one have insight into import requirements of cars into Australia?

Thumbs down

Umm, yep, Porsches, 911's in particular are way overpriced here in Aus. Along with every other decent motor vehicle that one wants to drive. Blame the government. Customs, import duty etc, etc. I'm not sure of the specifics. A current 996 911 Carrera 2 Coupe in the UK is approx Aus$149K. The exact same car here in Australia is Aus$187K. Aus$40K is a hell of a lot extra for shipping! Also, I heard that to make it viable to bring a second hand car to Aus, to avoid the "duty", you need to own and drive the car in the UK for 2 years minimum previous to shipping it here.

Unfortunately DaveK is right Keith. Its not to do with safety or pollution. Its do with the cost and the Oz government having to get their slic of the pie. Otherwise I would be trying to a 964 Turbo from the UK via Adrian Crawford or someone similar.

Who knows, I might as well look into it anyway. In fact I will...

EDIT: I just found this PDF;

http://www.customs.gov.au/resources/...ort_export.pdf

Page 13 gives a starter as to what you can expect to pay. On a car that has a "customs value" of Aus$45K, the Aus customs dept would like a donation of Aus$12.5K. I wonder what the definition of "customs value" is? Probably what the car would be worth in Australia I imagine. Greedy little tools...

cheers

Careful not to confuse the 964 Turbo with a 930. The 964 Turbo has a 5-speed G50 gearbox (as did the 1989 930). The last year for the 4 speed was 1988.

The 964 Turbo does have CIS which makes the injection technology a bit dated compared to the N/A 964 and later vehicles. Even so, it is possible to make better than 400hp at the rear wheels.

There was indeed a factory wide-body version of the 964 - I've seen it. They are rare so it is not surprising that you never hear about it. This was probably due to the realatively small price difference between that and the full turbo - most people opted for the turbo (even in that model not many were sold).

I'm surprised to hear of a 964 C2 turbo. I would of guessed that the 964 turbo was a C4. Jeffrey, do you know if the C2 or C4 was an option in the turbo?
