While not as thorough as Adrians book, you can get some good information in the 964 FAQ, which can be found here.

Well, after much thought (and a lot of help from everyone here) I've decided to not drive the almost 6 hours to look at this car. It just doesn't seem like it'd be worth it - even if the price is right. I know that my Volkswagen can cost a bit to fix, and know that even the littlest repair on a Porsche will be even more. Thanks everyone!!!

Oilslick 964...if you think you might be interested, the car is in Berwyn, PA and is on Cars.com. It is a 3.6 (I mis-spoke, sorry) and is listed as a 1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Targa, 90,000 miles, $14,000. You'll see it there, and don't even have to look to hard with all the search criteria you can set.

Kim:

Great decision.

The best advise I got on purchasing a used car is to buy the best example you can find, and not the best you can afford. You will not be happy with a car that has a history of neglect, abuse, and incompetent repairs. The money saved will rapidly be consumed trying to get back to a serviceable standard. You will soon be miserable and broke.

Drive at least 3 cars before purchasing. Then you will have a basis for spotting a deal when your run across one. Be ready to put down a deposit when you find the right car. If you don't, it will be gone before you can get back (good deals sell to the very first informed looker). If the car you were looking at is still on the market at $14,000, there is a reason.

Made a phone call and figured out the problem (we all knew there was a problem, right?) PA reconstructed title. Nuff said? Guy seemed like a nice guy and was very upfront about what the car was, he said he thought it was a theft recovery, which makes sense if the car was partially dismantled before the insurance company recovered it. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
