Hi everybody,
Next weekend I will take my C4 for it's first long trip. We are going to the 24 Hours at Le Mans. An appropriate maiden voyage, I think.
Before setting off, I would like to clean up the cabin of my car. I have had great results treating the leather of my Golf with Lexol, and the vinyl surfaces with Vinylex. Highly recommendable!
So, I want to give the 964 the same treatment. However, I am having a hard time telling the leather from vinyl in the 964. Does anyone know whether the dashboard, roof lining and door covers are made of leather or vinyl? Obviously, I don't want to treat the hide with Vinylex...

My last recourse is the thumb nail test--push your thumb nail into known leather and know vinyl (quick recovery = vinyl, slow recovery = leather). Use those recovery times as a reference and test the questionable material. Is the recovery more like vinyl or more like leather? Usually works, but no guarantees. Good luck.
If you've got stiching on your dash, then it's leather. Generally, seat fronts are leather & back vinyl. Door trims vinyl & center console also vinyl. To be sure, as John suggested, post your option codes.
Have a good trip to Le Mans. I went last year & am sorry to not be able to make it this year.

Hi everybody,
Thanks a lot for the advise.
I'll try the nail test. My option codes say "L22D", which I suppose is the colour of the car, followed by "YA", which should be the upholstry. But, I can't find that code in Adrian's book. Any ideas?
By the way, the dashboard is stitched so it should be leather. The lids on the door pockets are stitched as well, but I assume that the doors will always be vinyl.
Have a nince weekend!

Jens,
I was just going to post that question myself. Looks like you may have the Full Leather which I think is code 981. My 1991 has code 935 & 980 the Ruffled Leather or as they call it All Leather Seat & Supple Leather options ( cost on the sticker $1391 + $360 ).
Still I wondered about the back and sides of the seats, as the texture & grain are far different for the front facing. But the finger nail test says they are leather. May just be the Supple leather face is far better hide than the backs.
Can the Vinylex hurt the leather or visa versa with Lexol? Unless I hear other advice I'll use Lexon on the seats and Vinylex on my doors & dash.
