Default New 964 Owner

Hi all -

My stepfather handed down his 964 to me and I'm looking for some input on maintenance. 1991 Carrera 4 Cabriolet Grand Prix White, Dark Blue Top, Marine Blue Leather Interior. He purchased it in 1995 from the original owner with about 35,000 miles. The car presently has 47,000. All original except for the tires, stereo, clutch, and some upholstery work on the interior side of the top. I'm mechanically inclined and know my way around American vehicles well, have a GT500 I regularly track and several projects. That said, German engineering is new to me.

My stepfather can't recall the car's maintenance over the prior years. Most likely is an oil change every +/- 2 years for the last +/- 10 years. I want to keep the car as original as possible and use it for cruising around town/spirited driving on windy roads near home. Given the extended time frame since any significant maintenance I'd appreciate any input on what maintenance should be done. I have the warranty & maintenance booklet and will start with replacing the engine oil & filter, brake fluid, trans fluid, power steering fluid, engine air filter, spark plugs & wires and fuel filter. Unsure about checking valve clearance, haven't dug around on the internet yet to see how difficult that is.

Any input on maintenance aside from the above is appreciated as well as any helpful anecdotes. Other than a very firm suspension and what feels like a weak power steering system, the car drives very well with no maintenance lights illuminated.

Thanks in advance, including a few photos.

You got the important maintenance items listed. You may want to add new wiper blades if you ever get caught in the rain.
These are 30 year old cars so some rubber and plastic will start to age out. Bushings, engine mounts, oil and gas lines all will need attention even on a low mileage car like yours. However, you can take your time getting familiar with the car. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. These engines all leak a little oil but as long as it doesn't leave a puddle on your garage floor, I wouldn't worry too much about it.
There is tons of great information on this forum and whatever your questions, someone will have a helpful answer for you.

Use the boot cover when the top is down, buy one if you don’t have one. You’ll damage the top if you don’t.
