Default 1990 C2 smoking on start up

If I let the car set for a few weeks without driving, it smokes like mad on start up. It clears up in a minute or so, but what could be the source. I also have an 8th bearing leak.

I have owned the car for about a year, it had the engine rebuilt before I bought it, but issues seem to be arising

Depending on weather I think primary culprit is = condensation ; From storage ( 6+ months) - I also turn over the engine several times (without spark) to get oil flowing but I still get smoke too after. I was wondering about this too in another thread….. or how to reduce it - but I believe “overall” a normal finding……

Default More info

I talked to a mechanic at Reid VANN in St Louis and he explained why this happens because of the dry sump system and leak down into the cylinder. He did say that there is a one way valve to fix this issue. Going to research that some more

I was getting these exact issues as my car sits for 3 weeks at a time whilst I'm away with work. I installed the one-way check valve from Rothsport and it cure the problem. Be warned they are pricey!! This is it installed on my car...

Neil

Default Thanks

Appreciate the help and they don’t give them away but it’s worth it to not turn the car into a mosquito smoker.

Here's a pic of the back of the engine (not mine) and the hose that you need to cut and install the check valve. It's the line from the sump to the reservoir. It can be done in situ with the car on a hoist.

Fresh engine rebuild? Shouldn't be happening. Are you consuming oil? Sounds like they didn't check the barrels for warpage which is a common problem and/or they didn't replace the rings or did and didn't hone the cylinders. I would complain especially if the miles are low since the rebuild. Might have a compression test done to verify.

I have the rothsport unit I can sell for $250 new never used. My car will smoke every 30 or so starts. I think it is a warped barrel but so minor not worth messing with. If the pistons stop in the right place I get a good puff but nothing to worry about.

Selfish Question :

Besides the neighbors black listing you and environmentalists cementing themselves in front of your drive way …… is this actually bad for the engine on a re-start . That’s really all I care about ….. ( please don’t think ill of me - I am just being honest! )

The true and and only solution : Drive all year round

Unless they screwed something during the rebuild and it is only a puff upon startup I don't see why it should be a concern. We used to have the 11 min rule many decades ago. If it stops smoking after 11 min when sitting for awhile and doesn't consume more than a quart every 1000 miles it was considered OK. Watch your oil consumption if it is excessive than you have a concern. I would point it out to the shop that did the work and see how they respond.

It doesn't sound like you are having a major problem but it shouldn't be smoking after a fresh rebuild. I would keep an eye on it and a compression test will tell you more.
