Default Spark plug/ ignition wires replacement

Hi All-

Anyone recommend a nice set of plugs and ignition wires for a 1991 C2?

Also, I understrand that the exhaust has to come off to do the lowers. What gaskets do I need to complete the job? Anything else besides valves should I be doing when under there?

Thanks in advance,
Jon

Hey Jon,
I got a nice tune-up kit from Pelican Parts - they have the plugs, valve cover gaskets, cat-converter bolts and gasket, and other good stuff. I didn't get them, but they do have the plug wires, too.

Check your power steering pump pulley on the cam-shaft end for any leaking while you're there. I guess you should look for leaks from everywhere while you're under there!

Good luck!

Jon,

Pelican carries Bosch for 964's. Don't believe they carry the new NGK's which just recently became available for 964's.

On wires, Magnecor FINALLY released wires for 964's! Only been asking for years. However, there's a footnote in their catalog which states the lower heat shields have to be removed. Need to call them to see what the deal is there, sounds like their plug connectors may be longish. They have several different wire choices, including 7mm, 8mm, 8.5mm, and racing wire. 7mm, part number 67172, is $468. 8mm, part 60172, is $477. 8.5mm, part 65172, is $674. Didn't price racing wire. I'm considering the 8mm, as it has lower resistance than the 7mm. Their web site is www.magnecor.com . Don't know if others who sell the wires discount or not.

Before you start into it, check to see if you need any new black clips to hold the spark plug wires. Magnecor says their 8mm silicone jacket is soft enough to fit into stock wire clips/holders.

Bill-

I saw that footnote #7. What heat shields are they referring to? The entire engine tray? Funny you brought up the resistance issue - they seem to pooh-pooh it themselves in their marketing literature. $500 sounds like we need to be in the ignition wire business.

Good question - I think they were Bosch...

What heat shields are they referring to?
Jon,

I assume they are referring to the aluminum cladding that surrounds the engine. Mine have been off for awhile, however, I'd still want to talk with them to understand why footnote #7.

On price, I just looked at three: Pelican gets $400-$600, Paragon gets $475, and Performance for the heavy duty wires gets $550 (although PCA discount would bring that down to $467). So, yes, maybe we are in the wrong business! Magnecor wires are high quality and a good product, and while in the wire stratosphere, I think they are worth consideration (you might scan the 911 forum to see what others have said about using them - don't recall a negative, ever). As I'm planning on replacing my wires, I'd really like to find a way for Magnecor's to work - heck that's why I've been bugging them on and off over several years on having a 3.6L wire set.

I purchased a very nice set of wires from Vertex Auto. They came with all the grommets, labeling and the boots had porsche part numbers. They were better looking then the OEMs. No affiliation.

I concur with slickwilly, the Vertex set of plug wires are nice. Vertex part # 96460206098 at $299. They're made by Beru and are complete with grommets, etc. I haven't installed my set yet, but they look sweet.

Hi Jon,

check out p-car plug replacement
and in the pictures of the plug wires (near the bottom of the page) you'll see wire guides along the length of a set. The guide closest to the boot that covers the plug is actually a grommet that fits into the sheet metal of the body as it passes out of the engine compartment out to the underside of the engine.

Kevin

P.S. I sent the CD yesterday, you should rec'v it in a few days.

Thumbs up Nology Hot Wires

I installed Nology Hot Wires, Part #011489011 for my 90 C2. Real noticable difference. Each plug wire has it's own individual ground strap, very heavy duty. Ordered through Engine Builders, Inc. Reno, Nevada Paid $ 425.00 for set, saves over ordering direct from Nology. Oh yea, they come with a lifetime free replacement warranty. Worth the extra $$$
Order one of several colors.

During the last valve adjustment, oil change, etc.. I got a everything for my car from VertexAuto. Great prices and everything was as expected. Plugs were Beru, as well as the ignition wires (factory fit), got all the gaskets (they have a valve cover gasket kit that comes with new nuts and washers), filter (fuel and oil), Rotors and Distributor Caps, etc.

Let me find the link to the post I made when I did the change of wires.

BTW, good time to also change the coils.

Here is the dope on the Magnecor wire sets (direct from a Magnecor rep:

"We do have a set, but the spark plug connectors we use are a little
taller than the originals so will only work on engines with the lower
heat shields removed (which some race cars do). The prices are:

Electrosports-70 7mm cable, part number 67172 - $468.44
Electrosports-80 8mm cable, part number 60172 - $477.23
KV85 8.5mm cable, part number 65172 - $550.00
KV85 CN series 8.5mm cable, part number 63172 - $577.50"

Not all sets are available in all size cables. The 7mm (black) or 8mm (blue) cables should be fine for a standard unmodified engine, they have very similar constructions.

The KV85 Competition 8.5mm (red) cable is intended for raced or modified engines - it is not just a bigger diameter cable, the KV85 8.5mm cable is a different product that has more capabilities for performance, suppression and heat resistance and can be used on ANY engine with no problems.

The R-100 Racing 10mm (red) cable is the same basic cable as the 8.5mm and provides the same performance and suppression, but has a thicker jacket for more extreme temperature protection and insulation.

The "CN series" cables (which are not available for some applications)
are special versions of our 8.5mm and 10mm cables that provide extra RFI
suppression and are mainly intended for ham radio, CB radio and similar
installations with unusual noise problems; the CN series cables do not
help with most other applications and take longer to ship because CN
series sets are always made to order - they are never in stock.
