Default Any advice on lowering engine?

All,

I have a serious oil leak on the left cam housing cover. From reading this forum, it seemed that I can lower the engine a bit to remove the cam housing cover and change the gasket.

The procedure seemed simple, just put a jack under the engine. Loosen the two nuts under the rear engine mount. Then slowly lower the jack.

Anything else I should do or be aware of while lowering the engine?

thanks,
anthony

HI,
I completely removed my engine. I used an ATV jack and placed a wooden board across the jack. A notch was cut in the board to accomodate the spine on the bottom of the case. This setup allowed me to lower the engine without concern for engine slippage or damage to the case. Pep Boys auto parts sells these jacks for about $60.00. Good Luck

Another approach is to leave the engine in and remove the secondary muffler and sound/heat shielding on that side I hope you mean the drivers side cause the other side involves removing or at least loosening the A/C compressor bracket too.

Hope this helps

Fortunately, the side leaking is not the side with the A/C compressor.

Anyone lowered their engine before?

I think most people are reluctant to offer lifting advice due to its inherent risks and the liability associated with giving such advice.

I'd consult a Porsche workshop manual, Anthony, or similar reference to understand the proper manner in which to lift your vehicle. I assisted a friend of mine in dropping and removing his '74 911 engine using jackstands and a 3 ton floor jack. The procedure also required considerable disassembly and preparation. The tricky part with the 964 is determining suitable jack points for jackstands. It seems a commercial lift is the only safe way to drop these engines.

I'm fairly certain that you will have better access to the cam housing by elevating the rear and then lowering your engine. Unless you have a solid background in shop safety, appropriate skills and tools, though, I would recommend you pay a Porsche a specialist to handle this job.

Hopefully, I'm not coming off as condescending or dismissive. I'm not sure of your skill level and experience and maybe this is old hat to you. If so, best of luck and I hope everthing works out.
