Hi Jeff

Thanks! (I think)

The only thingis that the rods came with a 22mm gudgeon pin and we need 23mm, but that is a minor setback as they have some in stock and we will get Carillo to replace. Patience is a virtue...

Hmm,

You've more patience than I Christer, I take my hat off to you for that.

But do you know the end of the rhyme?

I don't see the seals nor the groove to accept a seal in you picture above of the block. I was expecting to see the same base seals as Bill V. illustrated in your other post.

Just Wondering

The groove you mention are usually used with the 109mm p&c's because you have to machine the case to make them fit anyway. With these slipfits this is not necessary according to 9M.

Christer

So in other words - the groove I seen machined in your cylinders is for the seal.

It would seem we have reached a point of misunderstanding. 9M told me that they do not machine the case for base seals due to the fact that the pistons are 107mm slipfits. Beyond that, I would have to ask more questions.

The groove comes already in the cylinders provided from the factory, just as it would be on the "regular" 3.6 cylinders. The picture that Bill V. posted is of a factory setup with the seal blown.

The only way I can figure this happened is either a broken head stud, and the seal bloew out as a direct consequence or the installation was shoddy and they had a pinched seal in the first place...but this is just guessing, as I find it hard to believe that a seal made it all the way through, and OUT of the mating surface.

IMHO, Christer's engine should be fine WITHOUT the "custom" modification used for the case spigots and the cylinder flanges...the factory grooves located directly at the bottom of the cylinders should be sufficient...as long as the mating surfaces have been matched with minor machining.

The heads/cylinders must sit PERFECTLY flat against the case spigots and the cam housings...this is accomplished by minor machining during a rebuild process, usually referred to as "decking".

Sorry, just had to spew out my daily helping of engine rebuild jargon.

The picture that Bill V. posted is of a factory setup with the seal blown.
Jeff, that pic was a 3.8 w/ the 109mm spigotts using the stock(goove in the cyl base only) method of base sealing. All of the seals were blown out. The 993RS has a factory milled groove in the case wall to match the one in the spigott base. Stock seal is a 102x2mm o-ring, 993RS uses a 110.72x3.53 for the 109mm spigotts.

The engine was correctly assembled, w/ the correct seals but w/o the case grooove. That was the issue. It is now quite happy.
