Knackered Oil Sender
Two posts in one day!!
My oil sender unit is telling lies about the oil level so i am assuming it has failed.
Is this is a diy job of should I take it to a specialist, I am of sound mind and reasonably competent with a standard toolkit.
Also is this an expnsive part?
Thanks,
Kevin.
PS When my copy of Adrian's book arrives I guess I won't need to ask these questions!!!

To quote DaveK:
"I have always thought that a system where you have to warm the car up before checking the oil is kind of flawed anyway. One day I'm sure I'm going to run the car to get it warm, park on my nice level ground, check the oil and think - damn, very low on oil, wish I hadn't just run my engine for 20 minutes........"
This is from a previous post (
checking oil level )
I thought it was funny, but you have to have your engine up to operating temp and car level, then you can get a reasonably reliable level off your dipstick. Once the car is on the road, reving, etc. the level from your oil sender isn't reliable indication of the oil in your system. Be sure you understand this before you suspect your sender.
A DIY description of changing out your sender can be found at John's site :

Look on www.porsche964.co.uk and check the replacement of the sender. Great and clear to understand.

Guys,
Thanks for the advice, much appreciated.
Rob,
I have indeed found another car, 3 owners 1990 Marine Blue C2 Coupe, 59k. Totally stock, still on D90s and Flag Mirrors, only covered 19k during the first 10 years of its life, fpsh etc. I wanted a 1992 car or later but couldn't resist this car, unusually for a 1990 car it doesn't leak a drop of oil (touch wood).
Still getting to know the car but checked out OK on the PPI and no surprises yet. Looking forward to getting on the next NW run to compare notes.
BTW a mate of mine (whom John B knows) drove by just after the incident the other week, he saw John's car and the White C2 but didn't see anyone around, if he had, he would have stopped to help-small world!
Will post some pics when I sort out a digital camera later this week,
Cheers,
Kevin.
