I have a 1991 C4 with heavy duty bilstein shocks, H&R sport springs and +2 tires 235 40 18 front and 275 35 18 rear. I bought it this was and where I live the roads are pretty rough. This suspension set up rides too rough for the drive to be enjoyable. Any tips of what to do and where to start to "soften" the ride? My understanding is all Mods have less that 6,000 miles and the rear tires have only 100 or so miles. Just need to calm the rid a bit. Don't know if going back to stock springs or even C2 springs would do it or if I need to go to smaller diameter wheels and tires. Help appreciated.
Start with the struts and springs. If you can identify the actual struts that are in the car and they are not the cause and you can identify that springs are the cause- then just replace the springs. Eibach springs are a good choice for soft but still sporty as they are a rising rate and comfortable for normal driving.
If you can't identify the stuts - then just buy a set of bilstein pss10 and be done. Or bilstein b6 with a set of springs if you want oem soft.
Secondly - going to a 17 inch wheel with 225/45/17 up front and 255/40/17 in the rear will be very helpful in many ways.
First thing I would try is borrowing a set of 17’s with good tires. That extra 1/2” of tire profile makes a noticeable difference in ride on bumpy roads. This is true not only for the bumpiness but also tracking straighter (trammeling) on truck driven roads with ruts.
I have the pss10’s on 17’s and even on the softest settings it’s still not what I would call a smooth or soft ride. That said It’s fine for me and soft enough to hold the road well when it’s rough. On smooth roads of course I increase the damping- the ability to adjust is a
nice feature.
Can you adjust spring perch setting? I would first work with the spring rates going softer in all 4 corners. Would not consider dropping to 17 wheels until I had first reduced spring rates.
I would switch to a modern coil - for example from KW. V3, Clubsport or a bespoke Competition with proper valve adjustment gives you the handling of the old "race-setup" with a more relaxed ride...
Did this with my two cars (Convertible from H&R-Coil to V3 and Coupe from Euro-RS to bespoke Competition) and got a manthey setup for both cars and now, both cars are perfect in handling and also very enjoyable regarding comfort and ride quality..
