Default Preparing for Big Black upgrade: Parts List Check

Hello - based on the Pano Article: By Bob Gagnon and Bill Gregory. July 2005I have put together the following parts stash to do the "Big Black" upgrade, along with a list of "Things to do while in there" that I also need to replace.

Just need a fact check....does this look complete?

It would also be nice to know if there are any special tools outside of a normal-use collection. i.e. 3/4" Torque Wrench capable of 400-600 ft. lbs. vs. my SnapOn that caps at 250.

Thank you for any insight!

Here is a crosspost to when I basically asked the same thing. May be helpful. I don't see the dampers listed in your post above.

Thank you @revolve40 ! A couple questions, if you will.

1. What sensors did you end up with in the front?
2. I don't see you did the 993 booster. I have the booster and M/C as well as the metal angle bracket. What is circled here:

Do I need the whole left-hand side of this photo, or can I get away with what is circled?

3. What torque wrench did you use, and did you replace anything else "while in there"? (i.e. wheel bearings, bushings, etc..)

1. I'm pretty sure I ended up with 993.612.368.01, but I can try to check tonight.

2. I ended up gutting the bias valve vs. swapping the booster and M/C, so not sure what all is involved in the swap short of what Bill V. recommended in my post.

3. I just used a 1/2" Husky 50 - 250 ft-lbs wrench. Nothing special. This was just a brake job, so no additional work at that time.

Great, thank you! If any lurkers, or if @Bill Verburg knows if I can bolt the 993 booster onto my existing 964 mount, I purchased what I circled in red, above. That would be great!

In the meantime, I'll get the dampers on order and await the sensor's for the front!

Thank you!

The 993 m/c requires all of the associated 993 parts

and as a separate but not necessary issue bias w/ the big black front and 993 rear is still ~1.713 which goes to 3.171 above 55bar line pressure due to the p/v

You don't need to gut the p/v(or remove it) but while it is in play you are throwing away a lot of brakeing potential.

bias ~1.4 to 1.65 is much closer to what you want most of the time, only way to get there w/ your setup is a twin master setup

Thank you @Bill Verburg . The more I research and buy parts for this conversion, the deeper the rabbit hole. I am (like others) tempted to just leave the 964 stuff in there and bore the P/V, as others say its fine.

Back to the Pano article, the parts list doesn't mention the "non" circled portion of the 993 brake setup. Only the booster, m/c and black bracket. So, I'll now have to track down and buy the pivot, boot, and pedestal or whatever that is.

On top of that I'll need to bore/remove my P/V.....and run twin master's? Ugh. Now I'm completely deflated and might just sell what I've purchased and just leave the stock 964 setup alone.

Even for the half mechanic this is overwhelming.

YMMV and the risk is yours to bear, but the BB upgrade with a gutted PV on my C2 has been a great improvement. I don't track and I do sometimes have that small worry that I'll lock the fronts before the rear which would be a disaster, but hasn't happened yet and I've hit those suckers pretty hard.

I may just stick with the plan, gut my P/V....run the 993 booster and m/c and have an "all the time" 1.713 bias. That's what the cup cars had....

So at this point all i need is the above non circled portion of the 993 booster setup. I'll have to track down those parts.

I needed the left side of that photo when I upgraded. While the booster may fit in some 964 mounts, it did not in mine. Rather than grind it down or try to make it fit, I just got a 993 one as they were cheap and fit with no issue.

Cool. Thank you. Where did you find your left side parts? Would you happen to have the part numbers jotted down somewhere?

Thanks again!

these are the parts you need
964 to 993
m/c 993.355.910.00 vac can
993.355.023.10 gasket
993.355.301.00 support
993.355.163.03
and the BMW adaptors

Noting really wrong w/ the 1.7 bias. it's not dangerous or anything like that, it's just that for racing you want to use all the potential which that bias leaves on the table

Those are the part numbers I purchased. However, the yellow box is not included, in those numbers:

The yellow box is the brake booster bearing bracket. 993-355-495-01 I got mine off eBay several years ago.

That may be just the tube part, whereas the part at the end is another number. You can usually find them together on part outs.
