John miles has some good info on his site I seem to remember. Also I think Phil Raby has done some extensive research!

Cheers,

Are you after a radar detector or a GPS-based warning system?

For radar I use a BelEuro 330 and it hasn't let me down yet. Anything from 100-400yds prior to gatsos it starts to go bananas! If your going to travel Europe you'll need the 550

Just don't go for an Origin B2.

It just doesn't seem compatible with something in the 964's engine/electrics - always firing off false laser signals.

Trying to get it working OK cost me time hassle and money. And I failed.
The database seemed a bit out at times, too.

I've had my Bell for quite a while, but I was glad to have it back on my dashboard after the Origin went back...

Radar detectors seem to be ***-packet size. I have a GPS that fits on an iPaq. You can get a 1gb microdrive for £100. Why hasn't anyone combined a radar detector/GPS/radio/MP3 player in a DIN-sized slot? I'd buy this little gizmo to save having to wire more stuff into the car

Just in case any US Rennlisters are about to get offended, David is actually referring to a "cigarette-packet!"

I don't know! In that I know practically nothing about the subject. Can 1 unit tell you where cameras are (GPS?) and detect mobile plod radar as well?

I have the Snooper S6 with radar/laser detector unit on the side. It has never let me down but with 2 boxes attached to the windscreen perhaps isn't the prettiest set up. I know that there is a S4 Snooper or something like that which combines most of it into one slim box which I would have purchased had I not got this one for about half price.

I have a road angel which is a GPS based system. Without having anything else to compare it to, I would say it's excellent. It provides warning of Gatso's, Truvelo's, SPECS and accident blackspots. It gets regularly upgraded with the latest sites via the net.

I'd second Rob's views on the Road Angel. Very pleased with mine, although it sometimes does not like turning on! May have to get it exchanged for another one!

Just wish it was a little smaller & had a built in Laser detector.

Thanks Guys, but surely a radar detector to pick up the mobile traps is required...or maybe not...does anyone know what percent of tickets are issued by the mobile traps...10%?

Christer, what does you radar pick up? Has it ever picked up a mobile trap?

no, but then I have not come across any. It does very occasionally 'detect' the radar used to open doors automatically in petrol stations and stuff but on the whole I feel better that it is there. A statistic i read recently suggested that just over 90% tickets were issued by fixed Gatsos etc.

I would get an integrated unit, one that allows you to plug into a telephone socket and update without a PC and so on. You never know when it might come in handy.

I also have GPS - an Origin Blue (B1, not B2) - and am very happy with it. I would also like the extra confidence of a laser detector, but can't really justify the expense given that :

- I think most tickets are from fixed Cameras
- It's still not 100% safety, since it still wouldn't stop you getting stopped by marked / unmarked cars.

In fact - I was lucky at the weekend. Was going up the M1 at (alledgedly) 100mph and an X5 came up behind me very quickly. I let him go by then followed about 1/2 mile behind (let him pick up the police cars) - at 130mph.

I always check my mirrors when we go past slip roads onto the motorway at that sort of speed - and sure enough, we went past one that had a marked police car hiding on it. I slowed straight down to 80 and pulled into the inside lane. A few minutes later, the police car shot past us in the outside lane - and immediately before the junction we left the M1 was a police car on the hard shoulder, and a gentleman getting out of the drivers door of an X5. Goodbye license I think.
