Default North Wales run 25th April - off road incedent...

As John Boggiano mentioned, I had a bit of an 'off' on Sunday.

Pics to follow (JB has more than I do...)

What happened? Just after lunch, we set off to the toilets, about 5 miles down the road. I just wasn't concentrating and a mixture of not reading the road and going a tad too fast meant that I (literally) lost control of the car.

First time in a 964, first time in any car for over 16 years...

So - what did I hit. Pretty much nothing. I managed to find the softest part of North Wales. These were the hazards that I didn't hit...

1. Other side of road - rocks and a ditch
2. Other roads in the area - armco on most bends
3. Trees 10ft in front of where I stopped
4. Kerbs - weren't any on the road I was on
5. Other cars - none around
6. Anither ditch - about 30ft in front of where I stopped
7. Barbed wire fence...from what we can tell, it would appear that I went OVER it...

However, I did catch the front bumper on a grass/earth bank. So bumper needs straigtening and I need a new number plate.

Various pics to follow.

Summary. These are strong cars. I came out of a potentiallly vary dangerous accident unhurt and with minimal damage to my pristine car. Most of the pituresque shots posted by JB were AFTER this incident...

Johns comment? "you may not think so right now, but you are very, very, very lucky"

After a bit of head-scratching whilst we were waiting for Porsche Assistance to tow me out of the field, we decided to have a go at driving out. 5 mins later we were off & running.

Amazing.

First, let me point out a few things.

This is a VERY treacherous road. It dips and swoops and plunges and twists. I know it, a little. Rob had driven it very few times (and we were travelling the opposite direction to usual).

Paula was taking pics from our car as Rob sped away up the hill. She stopped just seconds before Rob left the road. Dave had left the lunch stop pretty rapidly after resetting his DME. Rob and I had to wait for some cars to pass the junction we were pulling out from before we could set off. Rob then set off, followed a moment later by me (and Paula).

We overtook both cars between us and Dave. At this point, I eased off because I knew that the uphill series of bends we were entering have some really nasty surprises. Rob therefore started to pull away.

I soon realised that Rob (by now some distance ahead) was going too fast for the left hander he was about to turn into. At the apex of the corner, there is a crest and the road falls (that's REALLY falls) away, leaving your car in the air if you are too fast).

I said to Paula, 'Rob's going to lose it!'. With that, there was a puff of tyre smoke and our hero disappeared from sight over the crest. Moments later, we caught up with him struggling to wrestle the 964 out of its fishtailing. He actually got it a good way down the road in that state, only to lose it finally right in front of us.

With one final snap of oversteer, his car was broadside on the road, then the rear tyres gripped again and that, combined with his momentum meant the car shot forward, straight across our car's nose.

Rob's car hit a grassy bank and took off. It flew over the top of the bank and a wire fence on top of it and disappeared from sight!

Within seconds, Rob was beside our car, much to our relief.

His car was in such a predicament, with a grassy bank AND a fence and a very lumpy area separating it from the road that, for a good half an hour, we all just shook our heads and asked, 'How the hell are they ever going to get that car out of there?'

After inspecting the 'damage' and testing various things, we found that the car seemed remarkably unscathed so we just sort of... drove it out!

These 964s are just incredibly tough creatures.

P.S. If anyone is thinking we just tear around like hooligans - we don't. Rob just got caught out by a nasty surprise on a road he thought he knew.

Ian,

Without exaggeration, it is utterly incredible that Rob and his car were so undamaged and landed in such a soft, squashy spot.

An hour after feeling that his world had fallen apart, Rob was back to enjoying the day just as much as the rest of us!

Glad you and the car are OK Rob.

You must admit it's one hell of an adrenaline rush and it's a great feeling of relief if you get away with it.

Perhaps a club should be formed.
