Default PLEASE HELP ME!!! Wheel nightmare!

Thanks for looking,

here are some pix of my new BBS Mags on my narrow bodied Euro RS.

These wheels were supplied new last week by a BBS supplier. I fitted them but they looked all wrong with the car on stands. I sent them back and the supplier has checked and rechecked the wheels and says they are spot on for the car but that I need to drop it off the stands so the suspension can compress and pull the wheels in.

He seems right about the fronts but look at those rears still - does that look right?

I can only get a finger under the arch and if the tyre comes up it will smack the arch - this just can't be right?

Please help as I am struggling like mad with this !!

Julian,

My '93 with 255 series tires on 9 inch wide turbo wheels look the same. The supplier is right, the wheels do pivot inwards when the suspension is compressed, and not straight up. If you are handy, and want to check clearances without driving the car, you could do what I did.

With the rear of the car on stands, place a jack under the swing arm and take up the slack, unbolt the lower shock mount and sway bar from the swingarm. Then raise the swing arm with the jack and the wheel and tire will go throught the normal suspension movement up and down. You should see right away if there is a clearance problem.

By the way, what are the dimensions and offsets of your wheels?

Good luck,
Steve

Unhappy not good...

Dosen't look good to me m8, my Cup 1's look like below, If I place a vertical upright against the wheel arch, I have 1/2 inch gap between the upright and the wheel rim.

hope this helps

Kevin

I think you are right Kevin - the second photo of mine helps more to show the problem - I don't know the offsets etc since I just asked for wheels that would fit!!!

I am very unhappy

Sorry - I meant FIRST photo - the second one looks okay!

I feel that an inch less "offset" or whatever it is would be fine?

Julian, it does look to be a bit much, what is your offset on the rear wheels?? ...I'll bet it's around 42mm or something??

I have a set of 17" x 9" Fikses w/42mm offset that I'm about to fit in the rear, once I get some good tires on them ($$$$$$$ ya know) my 10" Fikses fit okay but do rub a bit w/275 series Hoosiers and some good hammerin' at the track.

I hope my wheels don't stick out that far either!!

The problem is that the offsets go in 12.5mm (1/2 inch) steps if I remember correctly?? If they wind up fitting like yours did, I'll be honest...they're going back!

Tires (tyres!) are 265 section Bridgestones.

I just don't understand how they can be so far out if they have been measured by the supplier...

I am seriously considering binning the whole BBS project at this stage because having shelled out thousands of pounds you just don't expect this type of thing

julian
the offset will be on the wheel somewhere .
you may have to take one off to have a look on the inside .
it will be a number with ET near it .
call me if you have trouble

You're a gent.

I'll pop one off and give you a ring.

It'll be just before 9pm if that's okay?

Having just had the kindly offered chat with Ian on the telephone (who himself is no stranger to wheel issues!!), we have deduced that the wheels supplied appear to be approximately 38mm offset - and we think they need to be circa 55mm - certainly this would explain why they stick out so much!!

Any further info anyone can add to this theory - especially confusing since my wheel specialist had physically double checked them himself??????????????????

Can't get my head around it!!

will call you again tommorow julian
heres a good picture to explain the et/offset thing !!!
http://members.rennlist.com/1976c38/...AQ-diagram.gif

ET stands for Einpress Tief (PUSHED IN DEPTH )

so , on an et55 wheel , a 10mm spacer would change the offset from 55mm to 45mm.
as the wheel is only pushed in 45mm instead of 55mm !!!
hence , it "sticks out more

so , if your wheels where mistakenly supplied for a 72 RS , with an offset of say 38 .................
