Do you need "more" than a 964?

I dont know if the 964 performs very differently in colder weather but when it gets really hot here (which is most times and 100% of track days), my car feels like its retarded. What I mean is it feels like once air temp goes past say about 32C, it feels like the ignition timing is severely retarded, feels like it's running out of breath, like automotive asthma. It feels great early in the morning right after a rain when temps are about 22C
When driving on the freeway on the way up to the track (370km away), I sometimes struggle to keep up with the new cars (996 3.6s & up). I dont have enough "pull" on the highway from 4th gear up and need for a long stretch in order to catch up with the rest in the convoy.
On the track, practically every car will pass me on the straight even if I exited the corner first. Granted improving my driving skill WILL help but that goes for every car. I need all the help I can get from technology as I am too busy to upgrade myself significantly enough
I thought of going up to a 993 but I dont think theres much of a performance pickup (say 3%) so its either 993TT (but only 4 in my country) or wait 4-5 yrs for the GT3 Mk1 to be within budget. In the meantime, I am again thinking of going RCT Evo conversion which in these parts is the price differential of a stock 964 vs 993 but heck of a better bang for the buck. I prefer NA but have almost given up finding a realiable tuner to do a full EMS upgrade
I need help!

A 964 is all you need. A well set up and driven 964 can keep up with 90% of the exotics on any twisty road. The 3.6 motor has the torque band to pull out of corners very competitively and the suspension is nimble enough for high entry and cornering pace.
The 993 is just as good, but sometimes I think too good, you lose some of the rawness factor. A turbo or newer Porsche is unnecessary for 9/10ths driving. In fact, I prefer N/A Porsches to the turbo motors.
I'm speaking from experience. Ferraris are fine but a very different animal. Lotus is not in the same league. Lambos are not ideal for track or hitting the twisties. BMWs are kind of bland.

I was referring more to the Lotus Esprit, but regarding the Elise, they're tremendous for going around corners but usually get pass on the straights, not what I call a "more than enough car" because you will always be lacking in HP.

Forklift,
I'm with you. Being a car ho, I think I've tried most but nothing can shake the RSA from the garage. I know where you're comin' from and echo your comments 100%.
Isn't life great....

BGL, what a COOL little Motorsports Complex...I checked out the link you provided. I wish we had one nearby, it's in the works though www.dragonsridge.com - man, having a track 70miles from my driveway would be SWEEEEET!!
I won't look a gifthorse in the mouth though, I am only 3.5hrs from the finest motorsports facility on the East Coast - VIR...and 4.5hrs from Summit Point which will SOON include the new Shenandoah Circuit!
Joey, man...lately you've been spewing out some GREAT dialogue regarding P-Car function and popularity - and I echo your sentiments to a "T".
Example: This weekend, I attended the NOPI Nationals at Virginia Motorsports Park, otherwise known as Dinwiddie. It is a DRAG RACING facility and NOPI seems to be the NASA of Drag Racing with it's "NOPI Girls", car shows and of course...lightin' up the strip!
Mind you, I used to be a BIG Drag racing fan...I owned a 1973 Camaro from hell, with big cblock and all - ran 12sec. all day and eventually got into the mid-11s...but NOTHING compares to road racing.
Okay, I'll get to the point...I attended, with my 1991 GP White 964 C2, clad in fresh vinyl graphics, GT2 bowplane/3.8RS wing and duh...Fikses! Although it is a 1991, EVERYONE thought it was MUCH newer and it seemed to blow most people's minds - just sitting there.
A good friend of mine drove the 964 up, following me in my rig that was loaded up with the Toyota WSR. BOTH cars were fresh out of the paint shop with new bodyparts, graphics...you name it - I was supporting a display for a well known local body shop.
Our tickets came with show passes, so my friend was in charge of the 964, myself, the Toyota. We quick shined them up and put some finishing touches on them.
The Toyota ABSOLUTELY blew people's minds being that it's a low-slung sports racer with pearlescent flames and FINALLY...emblazened with my "team logo" as of last week...it was assumed that the crowd would react as such - but what surprised most of us was how many people, (most of them subscribing to the "RICE society") - were taken back by the P-Car.
Like Joey said, the 964, as old as they're getting, with it's smooth lines and respectable drivetrain - still commands attention and provides an adequate ego boost, per say.
BTW, the Porsche took 1st place in Euro show...the Toyota - 2nd place in "Asian Wild" category.
...and yes, I ran them both down the strip during the open session on Sunday, the Toyota would yield mid-12s, data on the P-Car is SECRET!!
...but amazingly close to the Toyota.

One of the quicker drivers around Lime Rock drives an older 2.4L engined 911 - skill counts for alot. For me, my 964 has more than I can drive, which is a desireable condition, as I can grow into it!

I love the SCs and the 80s Carreras, but the 964 always seemed to me to clean up and refine both the interior and exterior of those great models. The 993 IMO went beyond its predecessors, to a new concept. So the 964 always has been special to me.
My wife's dream 964 is a white/blue/blue '94 speedster, though she'd settle for white/black/black. I'm not sure I'll ever own an all-around better car than my '93 RSA, now long gone. We drive our 964 cab a lot - my 15 yo daughter likes it better than all our other cars, except our Mini.

Everyone forgets to mention that the 964 has a great transmission compare with the older 911s. It's the first one that can be easily driven by almost anyone. The hardest gearbox I ever used were the 915 trannys.

The Magic Words
So I guess I'm not alone in thinking the 964 hits the sweet spot in the 911 family: fast enough, classic good looks yet not so precious that you're afraid to give it a good work out (great gearbox, too! ).
Like John B, I can also think of comments regarding our cars which bring a smile to my face. There's one in particular, which I know Jeff C is familiar with, which never fails to renew that permanent grin: Is that a turbo?
I call these the magic words and I usually hear them after a very quick session at the track. It's often the owner of a newer or more powerful car with whom I've had the pleasure of running with at speed. I guess the assumption is that only an older turbo could hang with their shiny, new hardware, right?
Once you've heard the magic words, I assure you that your longing for something "more" will all but disappear.

The 964 is the best evolution of the original 911 , just my opinion of course.
The pictures of AsianBond's car on another thread are brilliant.
And thanks Tony for the recent passenger ride round Oulton Park, I'm really champing at the bit now to get back out in my own car.....is your engine getting closer to being opened

Joey...
OH that's GREAT!! ...I know the "Magic Words" all too well, again, I echo your comments.
I guess my previous comment was not very humble.
What sweetens the pot is when you're able to tell the "is that a TURBO" inquiree: "NO, actually the motor is BONE STOCK, maybe ~250HP, it's PCA D/E class legal...just a muffler and a K&N airfilter".
