Default Engine bracket colors

Hey,

I started to clean the engine area and was cleaning one of the gold colored brackets as seen in the picture and the plate went to an aluminium colour.

I was using a very fine surface cleaner on it. I then tried just WD40 at the lower part and the Aluminium look started to come through?

Now is it that they are aluminium colour and they have just got tarnished over time, or are they plated with a gold color?
If plated it really shouldn't come of so easy.

All comments very welcomed.

Cheers

Alex

That’s very thin if WD40 can take it off!

Other then re platting it, is there any colour that looks similar to the original I can use?
Or just try and Diy passivate (not right word I’m sure) ?

Cheers for replying

Light scrub removes the yellow protective coating. I would avoid using wire brushes, scouring pads, scotchbrite pads, etc.
I purchased this solution but haven’t used it yet, you could give it a try.

The factory parts were yellow cadmium plated not Zinc chromate. It will long outlast the zinc but hard to find anyone who does it anymore. Although the caswell product should restore your part for your needs. FYI that part is steel and not aluminum. They don't coat aluminum parts.

The factory parts no longer come yellow cad but clear zinc. I have a friend who does mil spec work and does mine in yellow cad. I have a set of parts coming back this week hopefully. Unfortunately the protective coating has been damaged it is a sacrificial barrier but if you don't drive in inclement weather should be fine.

Nothing like fresh refinished hardware. I agree if you want to preserve the finish do not use a wire brush or an impact gun as it will damage the coating.

I have used the Caswell system on all of my Alfa restorations. Their yellow zink is a perfect match for hardware on old Weber DCOE carbs and lasts well.
