Default 964 Clutch master cylinder bellows replacement - use 928.423.908.00

Just a quick PSA. I was looking for a replacement for my torn clutch master cylinder boot/bellows and went the usual Google rabbit hole. This part is not sold separately and spending $300 for a complete master cylinder is silly. I am happy to report the 928 part (928.423.908.00) is an almost exact replacement. Only marginally smaller than the 964 part but fits well and it is possible install without removing the plunger rod.

Left boot: Old torn and glued. Right: New 928 OEM part.

Thanks!
Andrew

Good to know. @Goughary - wish I'd known. While my engine was out we were pushing the car around and the guy steering instinctively pushed the clutch pedal and blew the piston out of the slave cylinder. I replaced the cylinder and tossed the old one with a good boot on it . Just FYI - I think I found a new cylinder for under $50

Yes the cylinder isn't expensive- but the boot always goes before the slave. And that's annoying no end.

Further - if one want to switch to the mpl slave, you have to buy a new slave and rob the parts, including the boot...or, only for the boot really...

So i have a brand new mpl slave sitting in a drawer because everytime i get a new slave, it goes in, rather than destroying a good slave to "upgrade" to an mpl, which isn't really an upgrade in the end...

So- i looked for a boot, that will fit over the spring et al,,,and. No dice. Never found the right one.

@Goughary I would try the master bellows on the slave. I see there is less ribbing on the 928 part I used vs the actual 964 slave bellows, but the smaller opening on the 928 bellows is looking like the size of the slave rod and would probably seal well from the elements even though it wouldn't extend all the way like the 964 OEM part. Maybe it's not necessary for the slave bellows to cover the entire plunger rod length? As long as it's sealed where it matter it should be ok.

Good luck!

Has anyone attempted to 3D print any boots or bellows?

A 3D filament called thermoplastic elastomer is available that has the flexibility of rubber. I have no idea about longevity or compatibility with oil or grease but I have seen it used for carb intake ducts on motorcycles.

I did the same last year, but used a Girling dust cover, part number 363518.
Perfect fit and can be purchased for between £4 - £8
