Default Reducing wind noise. Door seals? Others?

I recently replaced my sunroof seals and door "shower curtains". In doing so I drove the car without said seals and with said seals poorly adjusted. I was stunned by how much wind noise comes from even slight mis-adjustments, deafening. After that experience I took a closer look at my so-so door seals (the big ones that go all the way round) and wondered if they are contributing to wind noise. I don't have water ingress but they are showing their age, frayed in spots. Mine is not a garage queen. I'm not looking for projects where I don't need one so I'm posting to ask if anyone found these to be the source of wind noise, or if the ancient body design, exposed wipers, rain gutters etc etc are just what they are. Also curious how much pain you experienced with door shuts after replacing the seals. I read some posts of higher effort but don't see follow ups if that effort receded.

In general all the seals on the 993- including the door seals- were upgraded to reduce drag and noise. Door seals recently dipped (close) to Nla status and are much more expensive.

Pete are you saying the 993 seals are a direct replacement? Theory seems corroborated by below -

I see the 964 seal part number replaced a few times, last one in PET is 911 531 095 03 https://www.sunsetporscheparts.com/o...ip-91153109503

If I open 993 PET I see a 964 part number (!) 964 531 095 00 which Sunset's site automatically x-links to the same part listed in 964 PET https://www.sunsetporscheparts.com/o...A5NS0wMA%3D%3D

I replaced all my door and sunroof seals s few years back there was a dramatic reduction in wind noise. Im sure I used aftermarket door seals and had no issue I could look thru my receipts to check which ones I bought If you'd like I got 8 years worth in a box 😳 so it might take me awhile

John if I undertook it I’d stick to Genuine to make life easier. Do you recall the process or difficulties encountered ?

when you get the seal you ’ll see where there is a 90 degree corner molded into the seal on the drivers side that 90 goes to the top right of the opening. I put a small amount of weather striping glue then just worked around the door fitting the seal in the groove. AfterI got it fit all they way around I then went back and put glue in other spots I imagine genuine Porsche seals will fit better. There is a felt strip that gets pop riveted to the top portion of the door jam If its tore up it might let wind noise in to
good luck

Porsche have stopped the 993 version on one side and have gone over to the old 911 seal from the 1980's

Im sure when stock of the other side has gone they will do the same

Just buy good quality OE 911 numbered ones for about $40 each

My understanding (based on reading rennlist) is that basically 993 glasses fit the 964 with 993 seals. But I’m not totally sure to be honest. I did see a 993 today and thinking of this thread noticed that the seals are much more flush with the body.

My 964 doors suddenly loose a tight seal at around 200km/h (124mph) or so. The car suddenly gets very loud wind noise blowing around the seals. I kind of assumed the updated 993 seals were to solve that problem. I dont spend time on the autobahn at sustained high speeds (japan is relatively very very conservative when it comes to driving) so- planning on getting new standard seals.

Guys here is what I see for "OE" - https://www.autohausaz.com/pn/91153109503
vs Genuine - https://www.delawareporscheparts.com...A5NS0wMA%3D%3D

Seals are the place I am most cautious with non Genuine. Are you all saying you had good experience with "OE" ?

Regarding felt window wiper seals - mine are beyond destroyed. I have genuine replacements in the garage but still figuring out how to attack the replacement. Have another thread going on that - if anyone has experience to share on what had to come out for access please do.

993's have a bigger additional seal on the top of the door, this probably help alot at high speed

Are you talking about the windscreen(s) or door seals here Pete?

I'm really not an expert so take with a grain of salt.... but basically my understanding is that all the 993 glass will fit the 964 with the 993 seals. It's below the belt that the changes all happen. I was looking specifically at the front windshield.

I'M confused.

The 993 seals are the ribbless version these were first introduced in 1994 on the 1994 MY 964's Both the 964 and 993 seals AFAIK are interchangeable and other than the ribs are no different. I have one of each I can double check but just went through this.

The issue is AFAIK all 993 and 964 seals are NLA and the replacement part is the old 911 door seal. I had purchased some new 964 seals back in 2015 which I have pulled from my track car to use on my C2. I am redoing the entire car because ( well I'm Not sure) but I recently ordered factory 911 seals which are the seals used on the G-body back. No matter what I did the door was tough to close and would require a hard slam to close vs a solid push. After looking at them side by side this is what I found.

The darker seal on the left without the white mold release is the 964 seal the one on the right with the white mold release is the new 911 p/n seal. As you can see the 911 seal is larger by a considerable amount. I have not been able to caliper the opening but it looks like they made changes to the tub with the 964/993 making the channel smaller. This makes it very hard to fit the new (old style 911) seals and have the door close properly. It is possible that over time the seals will flatten out and make a better seal but I had the right seals for this car so I am using them.

What you might consider is checking to see if you have a new or replaced windshield or rear glasses. If that is the case this might be the cause of your wind noise. If not glued in and just placed in this might be where the wind is getting in at those speeds. However do understand that back in the 90's wind noise was common for many sports cars and even today they keep having issues with mirror designs and other issues. I also find that the aero mirrors cause less noise than the flag mirrors.

I too am confused now. Does PET edit out past part numbers? This 2017 edition of the 964 PET has no 964 part number for the door seal, only revised 911 part numbers. Did the car originally come with a 964 part number door deal?
