Default Fuchs wheel sizes and offsets

I've no idea about working this sort of thing out and have always relied on advice to get it right, so...

I am toying with the idea of getting some Fuchs fro Fuchsfelge (17"). I use 225/40 and 255/45 on the car currently and they fill the arches nicely on the current wheels (I believe without spacers but need to check). I have a 1990 C4.

Which Fuchs would I need for these tyre sizes and would I end up needing spacers to fill the arches? They list 7J/ET55, 8J/ET52 and 9J/ET55 for the front axle and 8J/ET52 and 9J/ET55 for the back. These numbers look like Greek to me (and I don't speak Greek).

7J/ET55 means the wheel is 7 inches wide, with an offset of 55 mm.

The car came stock with D90s in 6" ET52 in front and 8" ET52 in the rear. So I would think the 7" front and 9" rear would be a good, balanced upgrade. The offsets of 52 mm or 55 mm are so close, I don't think you'd see or feel much of a difference between them. If you really wanted to, it would be easy to slip on a set of thin spacers to dial in your 'stance'.

If you go with 8" fronts and 10" rears, you might have to make suspension changes, as I have found the stock suspension too soft, which allowed too much wheel/tire movement with aggressive driving, which then led to tire rub on the fender lips as well as inner tub wall.

Edit: One other consideration (for aesthetics, not fit/function) is to check out the 3/4 view of the Fuchsfelge wheels. I have them in the 16" size for my '87, and they look identical to the original Fuchs. But when I see the larger sizes on 964s, I think the change in offset loses the dish on the fronts, which make them look a little funny from 3/4 views. Looks fine from a side view, but somehow not as pleasing from anangle. Y.MMV.

Thanks for that. My car already has lowered and upgraded suspension. I wouldn’t be against 16 inch but I’m not sure if I would get the tires I want in those sizes. I’m currently running 225 at the front with bigger stops.

I need to check the paperwork to see exactly what the car has been supplied with as I believe they are unusual sizes and there might also be a space at the front

16" won't fit. Those are exact replicas of the original Fuchs from the G-body cars, and their offsets are in the 15-23 mm range.

964 and later cars have offsets in the 50 mm range. The Fuchsfelge wheels in 17" and 18" sizes are for those later applications.

7 and 9. No spacers. I have had these wheels for 7 years. Absolute quality option.

They don’t look like they need spacers. 17”?

What size tires are you running? With the same front wheel you are using be suitable for running a 225 upfront?

They look great on your car.

Thanks for that. It looks like 17” is the way to go.

I do have the turbo brakes at the front and RS brakes at the back. I think this size I should still be okay though.

I have run a 5mm spacer in the rear, in the past, but the local regulator requires a sign off so I stopped doing that. They fit fine without.

225/45/17 in the front and 255/40/17 in the rear. It’s a C4 so they keep the rolling difference in spec.

I'm in the EU so it would probably not be much cheaper than buying new after import costs. Thanks though.

It looks like a straight swap should work just fine then. Mine's a C4 as well. I'll have to keep an eye on their website for stock.

What are the offsets on those?

I ended up going for 17" Fuchsfelge but I am a few months away from being able to fit them.

Stock 17" wheels for a 964 were 7ET55 and 9ET55, first # is the bead width and the ET is the offset from the wheel centerline, the bigger numerical ET the more inboard the wheel/tire sits

If you like the fit and appearance of what you have then use thee same specs for any new wheel, ie 7ET55 and 9ET55 w/ these wheels and 2254545 tires on 7 the front space(distance that the tire projects from the mounting face) is ~58mm in front and w/ 255/40 tires on 9 it is ~74.5mm

a more aggressive fit in front is 8ET52, this size was used on 964Cups, here w/ the same 225/45 tire the f/s is ~61mm ie the outer edge of the tire sits 3mm further out. Look at the current fit and try to determine if what you have could fit 3mm further out

Typically what you would want in front w/ 225/45 on 8 is a 9.5 or 10 w/ the 255/40 tires but Fuchsgefelge has no options in those sizes, you could go to the 18s but the 10ET65 would need a 21mm spacer to work on your car
