Thank you for the kind and well intentioned advice. I think I state clearly above "the closest thing" to factory spec 3.6 motor, I realize it isn't a new crated engine from the factory. We are however using almost all new or machined to new internals. I spent 18 months researching and preparing for the rebuild, settled on an engine builder and machine shop to undertake the work. This is not to slight anyone here who has good naturedly offered advice, I just feel having decided on the team, I am duty bound to follow their advice and recommendations. A camel is a horse, designed by a committee.

Final numbers are:
$7464.33 all machine work
$12,284 R&R motor and assemble
$19,748.33 total. (whoever said $20k was waaaay off)

The additional charges are for motor mounts, shock mounts, new Konis, a few hoses, corner balance and add up to another $4000 or so. I probably saved about $3,000 running around delivering the parts I was allowed to buy and (hopefully) save 6 weeks or so on the start to finish timeline.

Coming together fairly quickly now, although I probably shouldn't say that. Time to get the Michelins on the new Fuchs, hoping to start the break in mid July.

Porsche air-cooled engines are a work of art, are they not?

Amazing journey, so fun to watch. Doing the same literally right now. Do you have a sub-total for parts only?

I will have but not yet; the machine work plus new P&Cs was $10,500. I don't have a total yet for new chains, gaskets etc. and I am going to powder coat the tin and zinc plate some fixtures but everything including all parts and assembly, testing, adjusting and 1000 mile service comes to an additional $9,300, just not %100 sure of the exact breakdown.

959 twin turbo

The 959 is being built on the neighboring bench, hopefully some horsepower will rub off via osmosis onto mine, almost ready to go back in the car.

Drove home today on the 405,( saw another 964 in the fast lane), car is tight, new, not like my old car at all. I won't bore you all; new car , new feel, tight.

I have to say the power improvement is very noticeable thankfully, I did the shocks and engine mounts as exits are surprising; still hunting that LSD Not going over 5500 rpm but it comes up ferociously quickly and the new clutch pops changes. Tightness is giving way to fluidity as we approach 500 miles since the rebuild, not a drop of oil on the white wrapping paper I park over.

Nota Bella: Porsches are great cars, even older, less performing cars are a blast. A new motor can reveal a whole new car, I only wish this same "rejuvenation" was available to us as humans; I would love to touch my toes again!

Congrats! I also have about 500 miles on my refreshed motor and can confirm the change it makes driving the car! So nice to have the original performance back after 140,000 miles!
