Trade 964 for?...

None of my friends or clients are car people and I already feel a tiny bit cheesy owning a Porsche. It being air cooled and tiny makes the difference between people asking questions about it and telling me their own stories vs being looked at like some rich jerk. I respect them much and think they're huge value but personally couldn't own a newer one.

found this thread interesting, as i was just thinking along these lines yesterday - with a twist. i'm a huge 964 fan and a previous RSA owner, but currently do not own one. i regularly think about getting back into one and was thinking yesterday that the only car right now i would trade my 6GT3 for would be a 964. i'm not going to move on the idea yet, but it would be very interesting to post an ad looking for a trade and seeing what surfaces. i can see by several posts here, everyone see the 6GT3 as i do, a continuation (and the end) of the small, aircooled 'feel' of the 911. the plus side of 400hp would be a bit harder to lose. the only other car that presents a similar swap scenario would be a mint Alfa GTV 1750.

Ha! Alfa GTV 2000 owner here... interior 'backdated' to Junior style. Ten year project - my first bare metal resto.
A total beauty but will never be a DD... mostly because of water-tightness and rust concerns, even after a resto.
Maybe thats not what you were thinking. My 964 is my daily and only "real car"

Reason I ask is because I'm in the middle of purchasing a '71 1975 and trying to talk myself out of (or into) completing the deal.

They are such pretty cars and so simple. Parts are comically available thanks to everything mech'l being shared with every other alfa 1950-1990 (only very slight exaggeration). If you wanna go nuts you can buy parts or whole motors, kits, builds from Alfaholics (the 'singer' of Alfa if you don't know them).
Driving wise really no comparison to the 964 just entirely different beasts. Mine is SPICA (MFI) which is a super cool Alfa specific pump that I find more impressive than the MFI 911s.

Old Alfas!
Agree! I had this 1967 GTV since 1973 and loved it dearly! Daily driver in the '70s and '80s. Restored 3 times. In 2020 I needed to cull the hurd and it was an easy choice to sell it and keep the 964!
Yes, I DO love blur cars!

I've also got a 991.2 GT3 and it's a fantastic car. And even though my 964 is a tip cabriolet, I wouldn't have traded it for it. There's not much (or anything) out there that feels the same as a 964. They're just very special cars and they just sit in that perfect spot with the more modern architecture but classic style. The G bodies are great cars, but driving them makes it plainly obvious the giant step changes Porsche made when the designed the 964.
I'd really like to drive a real 964 RS and see what that's like - that might be worth parting with the GT3 (and a suitcase of money) for. Same with a 1973 2.7RS, but both of those are pricey propositions these days.

I didn't sell my 964 (project that hasn't even started yet) but I did buy another car that I knew would slow my 964 completion by at least a year. GT350R. You DO have to look past some flaws that some of the OCD here would be unable to do...but it's an amazing modern car. I desire a 997 GT3 as well but partially because I love how it looks

I’m very interested in a 996 GT3, both from track friends and other hype, like in this thread.
however, I wouldn’t trade my car for one, only add. Mainly because I don’t know how good it is and I’m not willing to risk losing my car on a chance. People hype up 997s (non gt3) too, and I didn’t care for the one I drove at all, especially compared to my 964.
Maybe if I owned one, and it was much better, I could see letting my 964 go. But it would be a tall ask. Part of the charm of the 964 to me is being close to that upright windshield, seeing those two fenders poking out, and looking down and seeing those classic 5 dials. The 996 may have a great motor and setup, but is missing that charm aspect.

I have had a manual v8 vantage for over 4 years now, its an absolutely fantastic car and I'd hold onto it if I were closer to a dealer that can handle the maintenance. While its a simple car to fix, I have done most things over the past 2 years, I don't really want to spend all my free time fixing cars anymore so its going to go. I plan on replacing it with a Cayman GT4 whenever I get a friggin allocation. Going to keep my newly acquired 964 for a while, hopefully.
