Default Gtech times for BMC v. K&N cones

Okay, the BMC felt smooth and felt quiker. I took all of the stereo equipment out of my car and went for a few test runs.

The BMC is cone filter with the open end cap which is supposed to increase air flow and would seem to help draw in colder air.

The K7N is the plain old K&N cone with the solid end cap of old.

The old butt dyno was incorrect.

Caveat, my G-Tech competition will not calibrate (its broken and they won't replace it those bastards) so I had to use the G-Tech pro with no charting ability.

Times for the BMC were as follows:

4.9
4.95
5.15

Time for the K&N were as follows:

4.8
5.05
4.78

It was kind of damp out tonight and I did not check tires pressure before hand. 1/2 tank of gas. Expected better with both, but the G-Tech Pro does seem to run a little slower than the competition.

Verdict, the dirty K&N simple cone filter is back in my car and anyone want to buy the BMC.

Thanks for testing, Doug. Did you reset the DME in between swaps? If you're through playing with it, can you let us know what size it is? We'd need the inside diameter on the end where you attach it to determine if there's a good home for it.

Here's another induction idea to consider:

Tornado Air!

It's a small, inline turbine which supposedly creates a vortex and improves airflow (whatever that means). Yeah, it's VERY gimmicky but I find the advertisements quite intriguing.

It was the TW90-130. This is the one that BMC recommended for Porsche Bosch.

One problem that I may have encountered is that the end of the filter may have been somewhat covered up by the rear hinge of the deck lid. The filter came very close to this hinge and when close, it looks like the hinge may really impeded air flow at the end.

It may work better with the set up you have Joey with the pipe bringing it out into the open.

Have any pictures of both setups? What does the BMC cost?

Doug, I'de also like to see photos. Silly question.......Is there a big difference between the cone type filters and a stock sized K&N with holes drilled into the filter box?

I'll try and get some photos. My camera needs new batteries and a new memory stick.

The 0 - 60 times were a little slower than what I was getting on G-Tech Competition, the fancier one. The Competition was consistent between upper 4.65 ish to 4.7 and low 4.81 ish.

The G-tech Competition must have gotten dropped when they were working on my dash and now it will not calibrate and will not stage. Looks like I will have to buy another one as G-Tech is absolutely no help.

I actually thought my car would be a little quicker with these seats. I wish the Competition model was working for comparison purposes. I do not recall specific readings with the G-Tech pro, old model, prior to the new seats.

Hardly a scientific test methodology! It's kinda typical of high school auto shop.

Does that make you feel smart or superior to make comments such as that.

Why promote things to others that have little to no value?
These later cars have enough problems without mickey mouse
mods.

You didn't answer the question . . .

Okay try these questions.

Are you saying it is impossible for a different air filter to make a .1 or .2 difference 0 - 60 on my car?

Do you consider mods sufficient to make a 964 cbariolet as quick as an 04 996 (both register 4.6 to 4.7 on G-Tech) to be mickey mouse mods?

Why do you feel it necessary to personally demean someone by using phrase like high school and mickey mouse as you did?

Here is a photo of the two filters side by side. The K&N is actually my old and it is very dirty. My new K&N seems to be just a touch bigger than this K&N. The K&N seems to have more surface area around the outside. As I indicated, I believe my deck lid hinge is covering the of the BMC when closed which may be impeding air flow to the end of the filter.

Come to think of it, I may cut some of the base of the BMC to get it away from the hinge lid and see if it gets a little better breathing or is possible that too much air may also slow it down a bit.
