I wanted to know what the zm995 looks like so I googled zm995 964 and what I believe to be this car came up on a mainstream site. I feel you'll get better feedback if you link it but I'm not here to blow up your spot...

I know forums can be brutal and it’s not my car to post pics of.

The seller seems like a nice guy. I wouldn’t want to risk offending him as I am interested.

I struggle to buy or sell a car to/from someone if I don’t get on with them. I’m a bit weird like that.

I just noticed the weird intakes on the rear arches. The black paint hid them in the pics.
That car has already been dragged all over Facebook. I can guarantee you it’ll get a fairer shake here due to the power unit and drive train.

I’m guessing it was brutal? I don’t do Facebook never have.

That’s why I didn’t post a link on here. Not fair when someone is selling a car. Unless it is unsafe or is being mis sold.

Very honorable of you considering where its being sold...

It looks reasonably well done. I suppose the question is if you already have a Very Fast Porsche what do you want from an older car? For me its looks, simplicity, joy. If 70k is in the budget I'd ask myself what fun you can have buying a high mile (145k on that one) stock car for say 50k then blowing 20k making it yours and 0k 'righting wrongs'. If 'yours' means faster, by all means there is some fastness to be had for that sum.

A lot of unknowns here and even tough for someone who possesses some air cooled knowledge. You need to first verify the most valuable part of the vehicle which is that 993TT powertrain.

1. 993TT motor is lower compression and easy to check with only one distributor instead of two found in NA motors. 993TT motors are also reliable if you warm up and cool down turbos properly.

2. 993TT gearboxes are geared differently than 993 NAs and believe they bolt on just the same. At least a $10K difference in value. '97 and newer TT gearboxes also have a stronger 1st gear main input shaft and not as prone to twisting compared to early TTs. The front AWD components are probably 993 based to go with a 993 gearbox. I think it is a pro because its less complicated and easier to go RWD compared to 964s. Bracing the gearbox when going AWD may to be a challenge? FD makes a RWD brace for 993 AWD going RWD but don't know if it bolts up to 964s.

3. Are instrument dials from a 993TT? ECU? etc..

4. No comment on body kits but I like RWB kit on a 964 that moves to match the show if 964 wide body panels are difficult to source or is not economically viable to do. Its already been frankensteined so you have nothing to lose.

I think a RWB 964 kit with a ducktail fitted with a 993TT drivetrain is unique and cool looking until I grow up. There is a RL member who put a 993TT drivetrain into 964 with a ducktail. Its pretty sweet looking.

Keep in mind that getting all of your money back will be largely dependent on your purchase price and it still might be a stretch unless you can do some or all of the work yourself.

9M would probably be able to help if you decide to stay with Porsche purist roots? Depending on the state of that car, they may or may not take on the project. They may not be your lowest cost option but you know it will be done right.

This is my conflict too. It’s a lot of money for a car many would frown upon.

Looks, sound and simplicity for me too. Most modern cars in this price range are a liability out of warranty.

This would be a keeper for me, so I don’t mind putting substantial money into it. I’m not necessarily worried about getting my money back, just very wary of overpaying and finding myself in a mess.

I’m not a rich guy and this is my midlife crisis fund. I’ve had the worse time over the last 5 years, and I’ve realised you can’t take money with you.

My big fear is that although car prices seem “buoyant”. In reality the market is closed down due to COVID and a big recession is coming.

Im not sure what the COVID relief scheme Is in the US. But in the U.K. we are sat at home with the government (tax payer) paying the 80% of our wage. This has been running for nearly a year and has been extended to autumn. It’s just delaying the inevitable imo.

I appreciate this has nothing to do with this particular car, it just makes the non standard nature of this car a bigger risk than a regular porsche.

The information about the reliability of the engine is welcome. I know very little and I need to start doing my homework. I never would be able to afford a 930 or 993tt so I haven’t ever really researched, just admired.

The ecu, loom, driveshafts, torque tubes etc are all 993. Not sure about the dials.

I think this car would be perfect for a RWB kit, but I imagine the price is crazy? It can’t be cheap for the man himself to fly over and fit the kit himself? I’m also not sure he would cut a car with a kit on it already?

I don’t think I’ll ever fully grow up so I could live with the RWB kit quite happily with no shame

So why not take the same sum and get a totally perfect non turbo aircooled 911 of any vintage you desire, any color you desire. 70k is a mighty fine war chest for that operation. Whatever you buy will get more valuable while parked and will be everything anyone could want from a weekend car.

this, kevin.

that zeemax build is for an experienced air cooled owner, and preferably one who does his own wrenching.

Here is the car I am talking about. One of my all time favorite modded 964s. Cost to build this car today is easily 2X when it got built. Did I mention I love this car?

I guess I love the idea of a 964 with a 450bhp air cooled engine. I thought the kit might work in my favour and put off purists if I’m being honest.

My thinking was, it would be reliable and easy to maintain being older tech. If that isn’t the case, I agree the car isn’t for me.

Thanks for all the advice and comments. Really appreciated even though I feel a bit deflated at the moment. I haven’t seen a car that interested me this much for a while.

Back to looking at soulless, modern crap that is potentially ruinous to own out of warranty. The joys of motoring in 2021.

TBH, 993 and 964 NA cars are plenty fun. Keep in mind that these cars were designed in the 80s. There is a need for a balanced relationship between chassis dynamics and speed. They are reliable and reason why you read about people refreshing them is because they are 20-30 years old. Nothing wrong with overhauling a car every 20-30 years. Its great in fact.

My 993TT is really for 40-130MPH; more towards the latter actually. Been driving the 964 on local backroads and find that more enjoyable than driving the 3TT there. They are different enough to keep both but a decision is not hard to make when push comes to shove on keeping just one though.

I’m not saying NA 964’s aren’t great. Just not what I’m looking for at the moment.

If I had a quicker car too like you, then maybe. Unfortunately my daily is a diesel pick up.

It seems the 964 I’m really interested in probably isn’t the car for me. I think I got a bit carried away and was naive.

Modern 991’s are great but I hate the image and type of idiot who typically drives them in the U.K. (not the cars fault, my character flaw if anything). A 997 gt3 would be cool but I won’t pay the GT tax and I don’t go near a track so it would be a waste.

997 turbo maybe the best option for me but they’re a bit soulless and clinical.

I really loved the idea of a 964 c4 with the 993 tt engine and gearbox. The other options I was considering seem extremely boring in comparison.

Agree that a 997 turbo lacks that soul.. I am a huge 996.1 GT3 fan. They only made 1,800 of them and its unique. Much prettier than the 996.2s IMHO. I would not hesitate to trade my 964 for a 996.1 GT3 and wish they were available in the US when new. I believe 996.1 GT3 is the unique GT3 collector here.

Comments from the 5:30-7:00 says it all.

That’s interesting. The 996 GT3 is the least desirable here. 997, especially 4.0 rs is probably the most sought after.

Im not sure why 991 GT3 values are so high. They aren’t as rare as earlier models. 991.1 has major issues and 991.2 is currently more expensive than rrp for the 992 GT3.

There is another 964 supercharged C4 that I was interested in that I might take another look at. The major negatives are it has a cream interior and it is being sold by a dealer with arguably the worst reputation in the U.K.

I really know how to pick cars don’t I

The 996.1 gt3 is good value compared to other models over here.
