Also, as I noted, there was a change along the way, I couldn't find the thread but I posted the section from my owner's manual on my '94 and another guy posted his from his early car. I know the late cars, opening the door should kill the switches, I don't think that's the case with early cars. I'll see if I can find it again.
Besides post 23 - which may have been a typo - that thread confirms my experience.
Correct behavior for my 1991
Key out. Windows work until door opened. This means the window regulator relay is energized until it sees ground from the door switch.
Incorrect behavior for my 1991 (remedy needed)
Key out. Door open. Windows still work. This means the window regulator relay is energized and its coil will draw approx 200ma (as measured on my car). This is an unacceptably high battery drain.
Solutions include:
Repair or replace door contact switch. Test windows each time you open door to be sure.
Replace window regulator relay with a 'bridge' therefore providing always hot window switches therefore removing the draw from the relay's coil
(Untested) my idea of jumping the window regulator relay ground from door switch to always ground therefore removing key-out-windows-work functionality and attendant liability.
Vegas993 - Are you saying your 1994 behaves as above ?
Yes, mine was behaving "incorrectly" I replaced my door switch and then it performed "correctly". And yes, I still check my windows every time I park my car, even though I replaced it a few years ago, lol!
So, here is something to add to the list of potential culprits to (easily) check out. I had a significant battery drain (1-2 days). All of the indicators (door switches, interior lights, frunk light, ...) seemed to point to something in the alarm system, which explained why I could find no current draws in the fuse box.
One day, under the car, I noticed the 3" heater hose on right side heat exchanger was looking bad, with exposed inner wire. Felt around and removed it and found an exposed reinforcing wire very slightly touching the big positive cable lug on the starter. There was no boot on the positive cable connection, also. New heater hose from Aircraft Spruce and a $2 boot, and the battery lasts for 2+ weeks or more.
My door switches were corroded and wouldn't turn the interior lights on when the door was opened. Drain mystery solved finally. A few squirts of this magic juice and cycling the switches 20 times fixed them right up.
