Yes it should, Ian.

I have one on my 993, and I am sure the 964 uses the same flat shift lever.

Obviously, the boot on the 996/Boxster is much different. So you must source a new or used 964/993 as a donor, or perform surgery on your original one.

If you take a look at any of the Porsche Tequipment carbon, aluminum, or wood shifters, you will see how the boot is attached to the ****. It is just folded under and secured with two tie-wraps.

The basic 996/ Boxster ***** are leather and silver plastic with a rubber sleeve that friction fits over the shift lever. The aluminum, wood and carbon ***** also have a set-screw.

here is a picture of my standard 996 ****/993 boot:

The one snag with a 964 install would be the shift pattern. The 996 bis a 6 speed, and the Boxster's reverse gear is to the right and below 5th IIRC.

A possible solution would be to use the 996 shifter that has the all silver platic insert. fill in the grooved pattern for 6th with epoxy etc. , then sand and repaint the complete plastic portion of the shifter.

this is the style that i am talking of:

Of course, you know your shift pattern by now so you could just drive it with any sort of numbers on the **** !

I have had several different shift ***** on my car, but the one I pictured is my favorite for feel. and the looks aren't bad either.

later,
max

This is a great shift ****: http://www.carnewal-europe.com/cpx_p96165.htm

I am not sure how the shift pattern insert is kept in place...but you may be able to remove it and have an insert with the correct 964 pattern fitted.

This **** has some heft to it compared to the stand 996/Boxster ****.
It's price is comparatively heavy too !!

Here is alink to some that look cool. I actually like the carbon fibre 986 one. My red one with the carbon insert should be here the first of next week. Not sure if I am putting it in or not though.
