Default Raspberry Metallic 964 C4 Hot Rod

We had the pleasure of working with our client to hot rod his Raspberry Metallic 964 C4 from completely stock form to his imagined dream ride. At 65K original miles, the stock 3.6 engine had developed multiple oil leaks and some of the stock electronics had become mutable. Taking advantage of this opportunity to rebuild the engine, we worked with our client to upgrade the engine from 3.6 to 3.8 and added a modern twist to the electronics and the intake system to improve performance and reliability. Below is the build list and the pics from this project. If you are in the Maryland area, you may see this Raspberry Metallic Hot Rod on street or track!

Engine
  • Mahle Motorsport 3.8 RSR style pistons & cylinders
  • Pauter 4340 Chromoly alloy connecting rods w. ARP 625+ rod bolts
  • TPC Racing custom grind camshaft, 993 GT2 EVO spec
  • TPC Racing ceramic coated valve springs
  • TPC Racing silicon-bronze valve guide
  • MoTec M84 ECU
  • 996 GT3 intake manifold
  • 996 GT3 RS lightweight flywheel & clutch

Suspension
  • DSC Sport Tractive single-adjustable coilovers with Swift 70/110 springs
  • 964 RS adjustable sway bars with TPC Racing custom made front adapters for C4
  • ERP front control arm monoballs
  • ERP inner and outer front tie rods
  • ERP rear spring plates
  • ERP rear monoballs

Brakes
  • 993 Turbo front caliper
  • 964 Turbo front rotors
  • 963 Turbo rear caliper
  • 968 RS rear rotors
  • Hawk HP Plus brake pads
  • SS braided brake hoses

Safety equipment
  • DAS Sport bolt-in roll bar
  • Racetech RT4009 seats

Here are snapshots of the engine build; Cylinder heads

Cylinder head pocket porting before replacing the valve guides.

Machined head surface for late-model pistons & cylinders.

New valve guide installed.

3-angle valve job, hand fitting valve guide clearance, checked all valves for straightness, refaced valves on lathe, and hand lapping valves.

Cylinder heads are assembled with new valve springs. Next up is the short block.

Engine case half with crankshaft and connecting rods.

Engine bottom end completed with new head studs.

Test fitting pistons, rings, and cylinders.

Filing piston ring gap for expansion clearance.

One piston and cylinder is in.

One bank is completed.

Engine fan, fan housing, and valve covers are sandblasted to bare metal, then thoroughly cleaned and powder coated gold metallic to match the BBS wheels.

Engine sheet metal trim also sandblasted to bare metal, thoroughly cleaned, and finished in satin black.

Bottom end completed. Cylinder heads are on. Cam shafts are installed and timed. Valves are adjusted. It is time to complete the upper end, starting with individual throttle bodies and their linkage system.

A close up of the individual throttle bodies and fuel rails.

Here is a better view of the individual throttle body linkage system. It takes a lot of time to set up properly.

Shown here is the new vacuum distribution block. This is completely different compared to stock.

More adjustments.

GT3 Intake Manifold installed. Engine is ready to go back into the car.

I'm running Rasant setup also. I think the air filter like that will hit the engine cover plus I was thinking running it like that would suck in water If you get stuck in the rain.

Now that the engine is completed, it's time to get it back into the 964. Starting with the MoTec ECU and wiring harness.

With the wiring loom all organized, we line up the fitment on the newly renovated engine. Ready for action soon!

Through fitment testing, we originally thought there wouldn't be enough room for the cone air filter on the back side and that we were think of using an RS wing. But turned neither in this case, so we located the filter on the back side.

Are you not concerned about water getting into the intake with the cone filter under the grille?

Nice! You didn’t mention what exhaust you’ll be running. I’m doing a similar engine at the moment but will tune/dyno first with stock intake and exhaust. Then try the Gt3 stuff/ exhaust to actually quantify the gains.

Very nice! Although I am confused why you used the 964 turbo rear calipers vs the 993 rears. The turbo rears are designed to be used with a 28mm raar rotor and require shimming to center the caliper and can be dangerous if pads are allowed to run low. The 993 rears are the same pistons and pads and a direct bolt up working with the stock solid or 968 cast hole rear rotors. Also any changes to valve springs or retainers for increased revs?

Onto the exhaust, where we converted to a dual pipe set up. Now we have to make it fit with the original bumper.

After careful & precise cuts, and some cleaning up, the new dual pipes line right up.

Surprised you didn't cut a hole in the deck lid grille so that the filter would fit while you had the tool out....

always liked the idea of a dual exhaust on the 964, interested to see the finished product w/o going for the dedicated left side opening...have been wondering, is that piece more trouble than its worth...? fit and finish and all...
