how much power can 93 964 gearbox withstand?
Hello to all 964 owners,
I wanted to ask all of you 964 gurus here regarding the G50 box from a 93 964. I have my tiptronic 993 converted to manuel and the gearbox was coming from 93 964. I am thinking of upgrading to a 3.8 kit , sports cam etc during rebuild but worry about how much power will the box take. Does any of you have power hike up to 300hp (or beyond) level without any problem with the gearbox?
I would really appreciate if anyone can give me some comment.
Many Thanks,

Dear Winsome,
The standard G50/03/04 or 05 can easily take well over 400 HP. I reckon up to 500 HP. The RUF RCT Evo uses a standard G50 box with an extra gear added and that belts out 425 HP.

Thank you for your advice Adrian. Now I can plan my upgrade accordingly without fear of overpowering the gearbox. By the way if you could tell me how much "better" is the 964 RS gearbox compare to a regular one like the one I have? I understand the RS has longer ratio in 1st and 2nd to close the gap between 2nd and 3rd but were there any reinforcement done to other parts as well? Is it worth while to actually switching to the RS box? Or is the regular one already good enough as it is, may be just adding a LSD?
Thanks again,

Dear Winsome,
The RS box used steel syncros and came with a LSD. The ratios were also slightly different.
The RS used a single mass flywheel as well. The 993 uses a DMF.
If you are using your 993 just on the road I would stay with a standard box to avoid any installation problems.
