Paul just to add my two peneth,
The 964 will always be a 911 the boxster as good as it is will always be an appliance.
Besides at least you can tell the missus that as the 964 has rear kids seat it's good to take the kids out in!!

Don't get me wrong the Boxster is a nice car.
But weigh the Pros and Cons:
Pros:
Handles great
Newer car
Cons:
Looks like a 996 from the front
slow
hard to work on
no interior room
No place for the kids
A dime a dozen and many more coming off the line.
German designed but not German Built
Numerous engine issues
Does not catch the eye like a 964 especially a widebody
If that doesn't do it how about this:

Wow what a response, what can I say except there is a stunning silver aero styled 17 inch alloy 50k virtually new Porsche sitting in my garage.
Dont get me wrong the 911 is one awsome motor car,but look what I get for 14,1/2K,A modern looking Porsche that feels great to drive if somewhat underpowered and check out the service costs 12K service £200!
Its not going to be an everyday driver none of my Porsches have been, last week I bought a 99 Merc E240 V6 fully loaded as an everyday car and we also have the family 4X4 so the 2 seater issue isnt.As a Sunday toy the Boxter does fit the bill as I said earlier the guy who owned it was very very fussy and transformed the look of the car with add ons,its a great car.
I suppose you 964 guys will rightly argue the point which is the better car so feeling outnumbered I may bring some of my new Boxter friends to the 964 forum for support now wheres my hairdryer.

Look, if you can put up with 911 snobbery you're going to love this car. (And before I get totally flamed here...I LOVE 911s...I've owned four, including the '72 which was my first and will be my forever.)
A few points:
Yes, please remember, it's spelled B-O-X-S-T-E-R. Many people forget the S.
I use my Boxster as a daily driver, including through winter. In fact, as "non-enthusiast" as this sounds, this was the reason why I sold my last 911 and Subaru WRX to buy a Boxster...I wanted to drive a Porsche year 'round. The Boxster combines the best of all worlds, a great performer with SUH-BLIME handling as well as not beating you to death on the day-to-day stuff. It's a tough combo to beat.
FYI most Boxsters are built in Germany. Porsche outsources a number of them for a while (possibly may still..) to Finland when supply couldn't meet demand. But rest assured those built in Finland were as good as (and some say better than) those built in Germany.
Service costs should be minimal with your Boxster. For the most part, they've proven quite reliable and I've talked to a number of people who are hitting the 100k mark with little or no problems. Personally, the only money I've spent on mine so far have been in "personalization". Oh, and one annual service.
Anyway...enjoy that car. I bet you'll be putting your Merc away more often than you think.
