Default Springs identification

Hi guys !

I have a question about shocks springs. I ordered Koni special active shocks and standard springs to replace Bilstein and HR (too harsch for me).

I thought that standard springs were longer than HR ones, but when I compare the springs I got, here is what I see :

The reference of the new new springs is 964 343 531 13 503.

Thanks a lot for your help,
Alexis

Not a set up expert by any means. However, I can see that the HR's have 10 coils and the stock only 7. Other variables that make up the spring rate would be spring material (metal composition), overall spring diameter and also spring wire diameter or gauge. Have you measured any of these? The number of coils made are the only easy spring rate control the manufacturer has - for a given dimension.

Hi !

Thanks for your answer. You are absolutely right, I did not notice this !
I check the wire diameter and it is different too !

Tomorrow, I start putting them back on the car... To be continued !

The HR Greens can be a little harsh for some. I might change mine sometime in the future, but then again I don't really clock up the miles enough for it to be a comfort issue for now.

Good luck.

This is the feeling I have, and as they are fitted on a cabrio, I thought they may not be the best choice for me.

We will see how it goes with Koni FSD and standard springs !

The problem you are having is the HD's are valved for a stiffer spring than the greens and it is the shock that is harsh the springs control how the shock performs. There isn't enough spring to control the HD's properly. I actually prefer the ride of the HD's with the reds better but IMO even they are far from perfect. My H&R supercup suspension with 455 front and 650 rear spring rates vs the greens 190-255F/220-265R aren't much more harsh that the HD's and greens. It is all about the right match. I have never had good luck with Koni. Had to replace a set on a later model turbo a while back that were blown after less than a year and under 10k of use.

I had no idea, I thought the spring was the one to blame for the harshness. This explains a lot, thanks. I will keep HD's and HR springs aside and have a try ith Koni FSD and standard springs, but maybe HR springs on Koni would be better ?
Hope they will not blow like yours did...

Hi all - I posted this in the wrong forum but I can't seem to figure out how to delete it. Anyway - related but separate question. What are the symptoms of worn struts and/or bump stops described above? I'm a novice DIY'er - oil changes, brake pads and rotors are the limit of my bravery. A couple of weeks ago, my 996 started... creaking. Mostly at slower speeds 35 mph and below, and the creaking is much more pronounced when I turn right versus when I turn left.

When I was in high school, my 1984 Chrysler LeBaron had a deteriorated CV boot and joint. The tone of the sound is similar but it's not really the same. Anyway - wondering if that sounds like struts/shocks to y'all and whether this is something doable for my level of DIY. Thanks in advance
