TomTom + iPaq Navigation system installation
Hi,
has anyone installed the TomTom navigation system with an iPaq into their cars and if so how did you work away all the cables nicely and where did you paces the GPS receiver?
I have ordered the hardware for this (I already had the iPaq and have a cracked version of TomTom on it) and it will clip into the center ventilation section but I am wondering how to work away the cables. I want to have it somewhere underneath the dash but I don't know how to remove that.
Any suggestions or pictures?

This was discussed recently in another thread (but sadly, I can't remember the name of it). From memory, I think :
- Remove the grill / cover over the windscreen demister part. Under that are some nuts / bolts for holding the dash top on.
- Remove the blanking covers at each end of the dash (you can see them once you open the doors). There are nuts / bolts here that secure the top of the dash.
I think that was it - but if you try those and it doesn't come off, then I guess there were one or two others.....

Phil's almost right - I have the iPaq, but chose the Navman 3450 system BECAUSE I don't need to wire in the ariel etc. The Navman jacket fits the iPaq & just needs power & a windscreen suction mount.
This works better for me so I can move it from car to car.
However...the TomTom2 software is supposed to be much better than Navman's SmartST.
If I didn't need to move if around between cars, I'd go for your system.
...I hope you manage to hardwire it in OK. It's a FANTASTIC system don't you think?!

I've got the TomTom N2 system in my C2 running through my iPaq 2210. Up until recently I too have been using the suction mount (onto the Fuel/Oil level guage..!) but have ordered a vent bracket from Dashmount (www.dashmount.co.uk/porsche) which fixes over the right hand central vent (which isn't much use anyway). I will be running the wiring either behind the instrument binnacle which is where my phone kit wiring is, or alternatively back through the defunct vent. There is only one power lead to route as I use a Bluetooth GPS.
I'll post some pics once installation is complete. IMO the TomTom is a fantastic system, we have a factory fit SatNav in my wife's BMW and the TomTom is easily as good, if not better, albeit a smaller screen.

Thanks for your reaction guys.
I've managed to get the dash of - but there was one hidden bolt that you can reach from behind when the clock has been removed. This one was a bastard to find and to undo as it was really tight and no space to use a normal spanner.
The TomTom works great!!!
The solution is normally as Rob described that you can move it from car to car, but that would leave all cables hanging loose and I don't like that much. So I decides to work those away under the dash cover - as I would only use the navigator in this car: my wive should find her own way in her car
