Default Late 70's 911SC Targa Opinions

Hi All

Its my first time on Rennlist, and I could potentially be a first time porsche owner after lockdown has been lifted in South Africa. 🇿🇦 I am an avid BMW fan and have a '07 Z4M Coupe.

I have an opportunity to buy a late 1970s 964 Targa, in white. It has just under 50k km on the clock. It has aftermarket radio and speakers and everything else seems OEM.
It also has partial service history.
I wanted to find out if these cars are collectible and as such appreciating in value? Is this the car to buy as a first time collector for Porsche.

I am getting the car at $25k and it will need a full interior refurbishment.

Looking forward to hearing your opinions on the price and issues with the above car.

Thanks

Something doesn't make sense. The 964 has the model years of 1989.5 - 1994. Is the 1970's a typo? Is the 964 a collectable? If you ask the group here, the answer will be yes. We all love the 964 but this is a very biased population who has voted with our own money. If you ask other Porsche model owners, you may get a different answer. Good luck with your purchase. Be sure to get a pre-purchase inspection. These cars are very reliable but can be expensive to repair if neglected.

yeah sorry, I think I got it wrong.
It's a 1976 911SC Targa. I just wanted to get a view from you all if it's a good investment at that price and given that it has partial service history if it's a worthwhile buy?

Are you an investor, collector or driver? Not trying to be a wise ***, trying to understand what you want the car for.

Need details on history. Google issues associated with magnesium case motors to give idea about what the important questions to ask are.

If its a 1976, I would ask another Rennlist forum where they own that generation of cars.

Thanks All.

I am trying to buy something that I can drive, mod into an "outlaw" porsche and still sell for a decent profit if needed.

I'll post in the other forum that you mentioned.

Thanks

In '76 SC was just used as an internal motor designation. Here's an example of a timing decal for a 2.7, The SC model designation was used from '78-83 for the 3.0 n/a 911s

In '76 not counting the Sportmatic variants there were 2 US versions, Ca and 49 state, and 1 RoW version all w/ 2.7l engines and a 3.0 RoW version
Any of these 4 could be had in Coupe or Targa.

The most collectable are the 3.0 Carrera versions which were all RoW cars

The Car is here for you to see.

It seems to be the one that you may be speaking of.

As soon as lockdown is over in going to go check it out.

So someone installed a 964 engine in it, Doesn't look like much else was

the targa bar is the wrong black
the SC badge on the engine lid is from a '78-84 SC

I'm guessing that this may be a 30' car

By google’s math they’re asking just under 20K in USD. I have no idea though how expensive it is to maintain much less restore an air cooled car over there.
