So I might have it wrong above. Maybe the repair part is the entire unit. I thought it was just the silver part because I was told they were able to complete the recall from inside the car. The black part of the unit appears to attach on the underside. Then again - I didn't speak with the tech who did the actual repair so there may have been some loss in communication.

I bought new struts for the front trunk lid. The passenger side looks like it could be a real pain. I've been searching for a thread with helpful hints but can't seem to find one. Anyone have any suggestions . . . or warnings Thanks in advance.

I agree so did the drivers side first. Not too hard. Then found that sufficient to have the hood stay up nicely so I skipped the passenger side.

Both sides are a pain. But you have a real sense of accomplishment when you get them both in.

I need that sense of accomplishment - though there might be an easier way to get there I opened the frunk to review the prospects of getting these changed and I think the last time I started with the drivers side and also found one was enough. However, I also smell gas vapors so now I have a new gremlin to chase. Any thoughts on the possible sources? I can't find any actual gas leaks anywhere.

Check the seal around the fuel sender and the hose which connects the fuel fill nozzle with the tank to start.

So - while looking for the source of the gas smell I was confronted with my frunk's kangaroo pouch. You all know - that little snap closure pouch on the carpet of the frunk that is always all saggy and distorted looking. I don't know if I've ever seen a straight one in a 964. I decided to see if I could straighten it out a little without having it removed and remade.

Here is my pouch before.

Here is after my 15 minute fix.

I'm sure this is not a revelation for many. i simply inserted a piece of wire inside the pouch and secured it to the inside of the pouch. I found a piece of wire about coat hanger weight. It was about 27" long.

I don't even remember where this came from.

I bent the ends so the straight section is the middle was 20" long

Insert this piece into the pouch so the bent ends face down.

I then simply secured the wire to the inside of the pouch with black zip tie or wire tie.

I did this in a few minutes and could probably improve the look by fabricating a rigid piece for the bottom of the pouch.

So - now that the Targa is up and running I revisited my insurance on the car. I don't have a specialty policy but was looking into it. As a starting point I asked my current insurance about value for the car in a normal policy. They said Kelly Blue Book was a good gauge for values. OOPS - KBB didn't list values on cars older than 1992 and the value for a private sale Targa in very good to excellent condition (upper 23%) was under $30k. What planet is KBB living on where you can buy a 964 in the top quarter of condition for under $30K? I also checked values for my 996 GT3 - for which KBB indicates they don't have enough information to provide values. Let's not even start with the '71 240Z. I was a bit dismayed to learn I'm really under insured with these cars since I have lots of insurance (over a dozen policies) with the same agent and company for over 20 years and they have never suggested I might have a problem. Now I'm shopping for insurance.

@jpoint KBB values are useless for classic cars. You can try NADA guides or simply think of a number you feel comfortable insuring the car for and discuss it directly with them. Hagerty and Grundy would be the top 2 choices. I think Geico also has a classic car insurance division as well.

Thanks Jab12 - I was hoping to keep all the insurance with the same company but I'll have to check around.

a bit late here. Its not that bad. Tip is to tie dental floss to the clip prior to removal. Looking for that clip as it pops out of your had and into the frunk is guaranteed to extend our time on replacement by 3 fold.

I just insured my 1990 964 Targa with Grundy at a value of $100K. Costs about $700 / year
