Default 964 US Carrera Cup - what to do

I've owned my US CC for about 14 years, bought it to race but decided to retire it from racing many years ago. Been sitting in storage unused and it's time to do something about that. This is a cup that was originally converted to a race car at Andial, converted back to street trim purchased by Kelly Moss Racing and reconverted back to race trim by Andial. Ran a few IMSA events and then PCA and clubs events after that. So I figure I have few options:
1. Sell the car- this is always what my plan was but now I'm not so sure. I don't need the money but I also can't stand the car just sitting there.
2. Go through car and make it more street friendly - needs at minimum a streetable exhaust system. I could paint as car has plenty of track patina but honestly I like the fact that it's not a perfect specimen.
3. Convert car back to full street specs- this seems like sacrilege to me as car as it sits is mostly correct for it's intended use. If it was not one on the original conversion cars and had been reconverted by someones besides Andial maybe I could talk myself into this route but I doubt it. Anyway let's have some fun here curious what others think.

Some street friendly tires, brake pads, and an exhaust would be simple enough to take her out for some weekend drives. The question is what level cage is installed and how comfortable you are driving with it, a harness, and potentially a helmet on the road.

If you sell it, safe bet it's just going to go sit somewhere else. If you find a buyer that's going to take it racing I'd actually be more inclined to favor the option. Some will disagree.

Full street spec sounds particularly ill advised. Sell it and buy a driver quality 964 RS Touring with the money instead if that's what you're after.

The cage has just the one diagonal door brace so not that difficult from an ingress/egress stand point. I know it's not ideal to drive a car on street with a cage from a safety perspective. I'll dig up some pics and post.

Phil, I know people should not live with regrets, especially over something like a car. But trust me when I say, I have HUGE regrets about selling two of my special 964s: my 1994 Turbo 3.6 and my 1992 964 Euro Cup Car. Both were sold to move onto the “next one”. And I kick myself all the time for letting that happen, especially the Cup Car.

It sounds like you don’t “need” to sell and are struggling with it just sitting around collecting dust. My vote would be to keep it and take it out for some spirited blasts every so often. You own a genuine piece of Porsche history. Although it may not have the provenance of a car that raced in a professional series, it still has the pedigree and DNA of Porsche Motorsports. Don’t make the same mistake I made.....

Mike,

That is excellent advice from someone who has been there done that, I appreciate it. I've owned many Porsche's and they are all special in there own way but I've owned this one longer than any of the others. I guess I need to start shopping for the correct exhaust.

Love it!!! Let me know what you are looking for as I have several different extra exhaust components sitting in storage. If you want, I can even ship out so you can mix/match to get desired sound.

Keep the patina Phil if it's not rusted, return all the street required equipments, install a BBI dual exhaust set up, tame the suspension, and just drive it. I'm not sure how many is left out of the 45 ever produced maybe 8-10 in existence that includes Canepa and SouthBay Porsche. There's no registry in existence for the Cups. I also have a complete manual from the factory specific to the Cup Car printed in 1992 if you need to reference some parts lmk. I like to race mine in some vintage event just for fun someday.

Don’t sell that car... swap the exhaust and blast it round every now and then. Too much history there and you’ve kept it this long for a reason.

I wonder how many inquiries you have in PM about buying your car? I think you might enjoy it for saturday drives with a little bit of taming. But I also understand when you are done with a race car, you're done - they are tools, when you can't use them for the same purpose anymore, its time to move on.

I will say that my experience owning one of the non-converted CC US cars has been that its a really fun car to drive on the weekends for short blasts. I'd do as others have suggested and change the exhaust, put in new 6 points are reinstall 3 points, tires and let her rip. Assuming the cage isn't obtrusive and is padded, etc. I'd leave the patina. I kind of wish mine had some so I didn't have to be so worried about driving it around. "Raw" is such a cheesy word. But compared to other cars, I feel like this one is always trying - if not to kill me - then at least land me in jail. It likes to go hard in street trim.

And by the way, I may not have thanked you previously for helping me find/procure my CCUS. While never say never, I don't think I sell it. Only thing I'd consider replacing it with would be the right 964 RS. Its a fun car.

Guys can't thank you enough for the encouragement not to sell. Really great group of 964 enthusiasts on the RL site. I did not expect that anyone would recommend anything different than to keep and drive car. It's a very special car and would be very expensive and difficult to replace not to mention it would really **** off my wife if I sold it, have a great wife too.

I've had several Porsches though none are nearly as special as the at topic here. Three thoughts:
1. Every Porsche I've sold was sold to fund the next one
2. Every Porsche I've sold I wish I had kept.
3. Every Porsche I've sold could not be bought today for the money I received when I sold it.

If I didn't need the money I'd keep the car. I now have just a couple 911's and I have several friends that go out on weekends for short country drives. We often take cars and swap seats as we drive, stop for lunch and compare notes. You have a car that will always make for a great drive and perhaps even better discussion. Moreover, you're in Bozeman - a great place to drive a car like that.
