Default Engine "rebuild"

My engine always leaked a bit of oil from the cylinder/head area.Recently this became worse and oil seemed to leak from everywhere so I had the engine rebuilt. The rings,valve-guides,bearings and seals were replaced.I never thought the car performed badly, but what a difference now!

O.k. great, but the rebuilt was only for the oil leak cause mainly then?

Where there any real damaged parts in the engine which could cause further damage to the rest?

May we know the price of all in US $? Thanks!

Mechanic #1: Whattya think? It's the by-pass line, right?
Fletch: I think it's the by-pass line, yeah.
Mechanic #2: Told ya...
Fletch: I'm gonna need some pliars, and a set of thirty weight ball bearings...
Mechanic #2: What?
Fletch: Yeah.. and... I'll tellya what. I gotta go to my truck. If Fred gets here before I'm back you can tell him to start without me.
Mechanic #1: What the hell you need ball bearings for?
Fletch: Oh, come on guys! It's so simple maybe you need a refresher course. It's all ball bearing nowadays. Now you prepare that Fetzer valve with some 3-in-1 oil and some gauze pads. And I'm gonna need about 10 quarts of anti-freeze. Preferably Prestone. No... no...make that Quaker State. And wash those windows... they've got filth and muck on them.

Default epitome of 964 engine problems

This is what you dont want your engine to look like. It ran great but smelled of hot oil. My wife is about to shoot me over the repair bill. It is at TRE now for reseal, clutch and a couple of other items. Cost to repair 8200.00.

Are you sure it wasn't the engine ventilation hose and the oil pressure sender seal that caused all this mess? In my opinion oil falls down to earth and not up in the sky. The fan blows all oil from the top to the engine to the bottem aswell.......

Not a rebuild, just fixing all the oil leaks and a new clutch. As far as the leaks go, Dave at TRE checked it out and determined it is leaking for base of cylinders and heads.

Hmmm, looks alot like mine did.

And this it in the middle of rebuild with late model cylinders.

I used new PCs, cylinder and a nice set of 993 heads with new valves etc. Also, replaced the clutch and flywheel at the same time. Managed to get in 1 day of driving before the snow fell last November.

It really seems like Porsche should have had a recall on this.

They never will recall for this trouble. All cars from 92 and younger where fittet with the gaskets between the cylinder heads.

I am happy to hear that it was not necessairy to get a complete rebuilt then. Gives more reason to believe that the engines are reliable.

Sorry for delay.I fixed the engine because the oil consumption suddenly went up,also I was tired of driving and walking through oil in the garage. The car has a lot more torque(despite not being allowed to do more than 4k rpm) than before,so I guess the leaks and worn parts were sapping engine power/torque.There were no "damaged" parts in the engine save for a broken valve spring. My car is used daily and sees a fair amount of hard driving on the track. The cost was 33k RSA rand, about 5k USD and 3k GBP.

You know, owning a 964 is like having an axe hanging over your head. You know you'll need a rebuild at somepoint, and it's going to hit you for 10 grand, and it makes you all jumpy about everything.

After a good drive, I'll pull into the garage and I'm like "Do I smell oil?" or "Oh my gosh, I'm down a quart, do I need a rebuild?" or "That was a strange clatter when I turned off the ignition -do I need a rebuild?"

The stress is going to kill me... and I've only got 60K on the clock!

LOL, so right. My 964 has 69k, but on the leakdown has great numbers, the cams are good, so I am just fixing all of the shortcomings and oil leaks. I cant wait to get it back.
