Reproducing Recaro SPG Kevlar seats
Thought I should share what we recently did to my set of Recaro Pole Positions.
In germany the TUV gives us more and more hard times, it has become quite difficult to make changes to your car even if itīs a 30 years old one.
I always loved the look of the old Recaro SPGs in Carbon/Kevlar which were run in the Cup series. Old originals are almost impossible to find and horrendous expensive if you find one. Additionally the SPGs are not road legal in germany. But the quite similar "Pole Position" is road legal.
So I bought a set of Recaro Pole Positions and fitted them first straight out of the box.
After a few weeks I took them out again and started work on them with the help of a very good friend of mine whoīs well and long experienced in the art of Carbon/Kevlar-manufacturing due to his job in the yachting-industries.
Took off the textile stuff from the seat and started sanding it down...
Sanding down almost finished...
Measuring and cutting the Kevlar-textile
3M spray glue on the backside of the seat and carefully placing the kevlar onto it
Kevlar readily lied down and already sealed with some magic clearcoat/filler stuff...
Sanding down the filler stuff twice is the worst work in the whole project. Sanding it down enough to get a smooth surface without sanding through the filler which would ruin the look of the kevlar. Two coatings, twice sanding and afterwards off the paint shop for a perfect satin clear coat from a pro. We added these two grey edges to the black Recaro seat cover and attached a Porsche Logo to it, too.
Finally fitted to the car and really happy with it.
In the end total costs were:
280 Euros for Kevlar, Spray glue and filler
100 Euros for the paint shop
80 Euros for the stitching of the grey edges and Porsche Logo
40 Euros for the stitching of the white Recaro-decal on the backside of the seats
56 Euros for two bottles of Mollydooker Redwine. Helped us not to loose our mind over the whole project.
Thanks for reading.
