Potential tip of the iceberg. Agree with the sentiments of tackling the problem now. It never gets better with time. Remember the adage: rust never sleeps.
Has the windshield ever been replaced to your knowlege? If yes, it's possible the seal wasn't replaced. If not that could have been the original cause of water seeping through seal In any case, the above recommendations to attend to it seem well founded. It is likely worse than it seems, and it will get worse
First, rust in this area is pretty common and can be addressed fairly easily. You maybe able to save your glass if it is still good. Be careful with the radio antenna connector on the passenger side. It is a small and somewhat brittle wire that is easily cut or ripped when removing the windshield - the radio antenna is integrated into the windshield. I found reinstalling the windshield harder than expected. You need someone who has done this before - most auto glass chain stores have not.
I would definitely address the rust sooner rather than later.
I have similar in around the windshield on mine. And a bit more rust around the seals in front cowl just below. Afraid of starting on them, as chances are it'll lead to full glass out restoration...
I agree that the rust should be addressed sooner than later. It also appears to me that there’s already been paintwork done in that area so it’s possible that someone performed a previous repair and didn’t do it correctly hence the rust.
Thanks everyone. I appreciate your individual experience with 964s especially. I also sent the pictures to a friend who's a really good body/paint guy (does high dollar restoration work). He didn't think it looked too serious, but also warned it could be more extensive. He also has experience with windshields with rubber seals like on Porsches.
you need a specialist to take out the window and then once cleaned up you will see hole(s) which can be cut out and welded. This is common on 964s and 993s. Water gets trapped under the seal and has nowhere to go. Lift the rubber on the rear window at the corners as well (as above)...cheaper to fix both at the same time if it needs it.
