Default 964 new clutch

Installing new clutch on my 1994 Turbo Look. Porsche brand or Sachs? What else to tackle when I am in there?

I’m by no means an expert on this but just converted from a race set up (996 Cup parts) to a 964 Cup set up with a light weight fly wheel. For some reason I remember when I was looking into parts somebody said they’re the same but the Porsche part is “OEM” because it comes from Porsche. I was told it’s the same, There are many more people on here that know more than I do so I’d wait for others to chime in.

The Porsche clutch is indeed a Sachs item in the box. Change the RMS while your there.

My previous change was a Sachs kit... worked fine.
I then played a bit with a turbo 997, launching extremely hard, more and more and more until I burned the clutch and flywheel with so much smoke you couldn't see anybody behind me for a minute.

Let it cool, just drove on and it worked well for another 3 years.
When replacing it the flywheel was all kinds of blue shades, the clutch was looking a bit abused.

Since it took great abuse and the car was still driveable, it was enough of a testament to the quality and I put another one in... with LWFW this time and a Steve Wong chip.

The next one will be Sachs again... but I'm not taking on 997 turbos anymore

BTW off topic. I found three complete tilton clutch assemblies and packs for the 996Cup in the parts bin. They are in fact 4 plate and not three plate as I had thought.

Sachs is pretty much what everyone uses.

Cobalt- Ended up doing the 964 Cup Clutch with LWF (it had previously had one) and replaced what turned out to be a 4 puck disc and Sachs Racing pressure plate on my RSA. It’s way easier to drive versus what I had going on for the race set up. I’m still chasing the rev drop and stalling issue which are side effects of the LWF. I did put in the Steve Wong 911 chip specifically for the cat bypass and LWF and I’m still getting the stalling when I’m coming to a rolling stop and depressing the clutch. Actually had a new ICV and put that in and not much change. Solution for now is my rolling my right foot on the throttle when I come to a stop. It’ll settle into an idle but the first drop kills the engine. I tell people it’s a hybrid...

I've had the same issues and developed the same technique to avoid stalling when coming to a stop.
I still think the LWF is worth it; it has a real effect on the responsiveness of the motor.

Steve should be able to correct that for you. I have the same clutch setup and mine doesn't stall although my chip was done by protosport in NJ.

Based on research I’ve done and reading the threads on this topic, it seems to be a little hit or miss on if you’ll have stalling. My guess being the cars have been around a long time and various modifications were made over the years that may indirectly impact stalling. I’ll follow Cobalt’s advice and contact the chip producer to see if there are other options based on my set up. I think it’s worth having the LWF.

I agree it is worth installing the LWF unless you are commuting in heavy traffic on a regular basis, which is not something many people do in a 964. Steve's chip will either help or eliminate the issue. Go for it!

Daily driver here, with RS LWF and SW chip. Sometimes she stalls when all accessories are at full power.... but at approach of a light I just let out the clutch and she comes back to life... and I am a master of heel and toe work thanks to driving for months with a leaking fuel pressure regulator.

Possible, if you're very dedicated and don't panic quickly when you lose power steering for a few seconds.

My free advice is use track parts if you plan to track the car and don't mind the detrimental effect track parts may have on a street car. I wouldn't put a LWF on a car that was primarily a street car. But hey I could be way off base.
