Default Bumper respray.

Hi Guys.

This is one of my first posts after just buying a 90 C2 964.

I am replacing the front bumper with a stock item. I've sourced the bumper and any other bits needed and will be taking it to my paint shop soon.

Considering the existing paint (on the rest of the car) is 30 years old (we don't suspect it's been resprayed, yet is in very good condition with no sign of sun damage etc) what's the chance of getting a good colour match? The paint is Metallic Silver, paint code 980 - not sure if it's easier or more difficult to match that, than say a solid and/or darker colour.

Should I ask my paint guy to order 980 and go ahead and paint it (without seeng the car), or should I be giving him the fuel cap, for example, from which he can take a colour match?

I'm also an owner of a 60 year old VW and those guys go NUTS for OG paint cars. A 60 year, never been repainted, OG paint VW Bus is a highly desirable thing. So I really want to do what I can to ensure my 964 is never repainted. There is zero rust and there are no scrapes nor significant scratches so I see no reason to repaint the whole car.

My paint guy will be able to answer my question, but a few other opinions wouldn't harm.

Thanks in advance.

Some colors are easier than others. White sometimes needs just a little yellow for example to match perfectly. I would do a small sample and see if it looks right / measure if you really want to get it right. Btw, I am sure you know that some of the original colors were single stage, ie no clear coat.

A painter that is willing to match to a body panel is ideal, especially with metallics. Some guys aren't willing to take the time to properly do a color match and just want to go off the code.

For what's worth, I shaved the license plate and resprayed my bumper myself (Polar Silver) a couple of months ago and I think the match was pretty much dead on. I used PPG paint. YMMV

This is very important. Metallics, especially silvers can be tricky, it might match if you look at it dead on, but from an angle the color can look off. Having the gas door would really help them.

Thanks guys for all your input. Your responses were pretty much as expected. I'll get the car to him with instructions not to go by the paint code but to do a match.

Cheers!

I'm not afraid to say it - Silver IS THE BEST COLOUR for a 964

Hey, Vegas993. What are those rims you're sporting there. They're nice

Thanks, I looked them up and struggled to find the details I was after, sizes and price. I've just sent them a messsge.

Thanks.
