I'm dealing with the notion I'll sell a couple of my cars before too long and decided it was a good time to buy a paint meter. I chose the Fender Splendor FS688 meter.
What is the typical factory paint depths I should read for my 964? Are other factory paint depths similar (BMW?)
Thanks for any help here.

4 - 6 mills for the Porsche, no ideal on the BMW.

4-6mills will indicate original paint. If it goes beyond that, you really are looking for consistency. having a higher # just indicates paintwork. but if for example its all 10mills, but sections jump abruptly into the mid teens or higher, it indicates body filler.

A paint meter is an invaluable tool although a trained eye is worth more. You need to use the meter as a tool but always use your eyes and hands to feel and see what is actually happening. I have metered cars that had panels reading 4.5mils but the tape lines and overspray told me there was more than just the numbers. So always check the edges for tape lines and seals for overspray. I have seen original paint with higher numbers in the 7's and even some quarter sized up to 9 mils but not often. Many cars were sent back for rework at the factory but a lot of it was part of the 26 stage paint process and the imperfections were in the primer or metal and worked out before final coat. Usually when you see a full panel or a series of panels with high numbers it is pretty much a given it has had paintwork.
