Default Cup 1 - RS vs. RSA

Trying to understand the real world differences between cup 1 wheel sizes and offsets between RSA and RS. They seem to be as follows:

RS America:
  • front: 7J 17 55mm w/ 205/50ZR17
  • rear: 8J 17 52mm w/ 255/40ZR17
RS:
  • front: 7.5J 17 55mm w/ 205/50ZR17 (1992)
  • rear: 9J 17 55mm w/ 255/40ZR17 (1992)

With the same size tires, is handling affected by the wider wheel? Are there other advantages to one over the other?

stretch with wider wheel gives quicker/sharper steering response and quicker directional changes.

Depends what you're after. A couple notes:

255 is a lot for an 8" wheel. I don't think you will get many positive reviews on that combination unless you're after comfort.

Most also want more tire up front. 225 is the popular choice. 235 also fits well on the desirable 7.5 and 8 wheels, however I would suggest a 265 (tough to find in 17" performance tire) or 275 rear tire with a 235 front. For that, You want a 9 or 9.5" rear Cup wheel.

To get the most rubber on the road, 8/9.5 with 245/275 is the ceiling on Cup wheels.
