Default 5 pt harness install

I am looking at putting a 5 point harness in my car to be used for track days. In my SC I just used the stock seatbelt mounting points for the lower mounts. In the C2 the stock belts attach to the seats on the inside. I am changing the seats as well as putting in the harness. What have other people done for belt attachment points? My current thought is to weld in a plate to the center tunnel and mount both belts there(stock and 5 pt).

thanks

john

Default Simplest Solution

John, the simple solution is to contact a Brey Kraus dealer like Windward or your local P-Car facility that supports local racers.

A 964 and 993 are "strange birds" when it comes to this very subject.

At first I ordered the BK inboard and outboard harness mount clips, both very nice packages...come with spacers, grommets and whatnot to facilitate mounting two VERY nice stainless steel hooks to your factory seatbelt mounting points.

This allows one to clip/unclip the lapbelts when not using the car on the track.

As for mounting your shoulder belts, get the proper eyelets from a shop or another supplier and replace the bolts that hold your rear seatbelts in...unless you are able to wrap your harnesses around a rollbar.

DO NOT WRAP THEM AROUND A HARNESS GUIDE BAR!!

I have since gone to drilling the tunnel aft of the front seats and bolting in eyelets to click the inboard lap belts in, and used the factory mounting hole on the outboard belts to put in an eyelet, as to click those belts in. This because I no longer have factory seats, with the inboard mount on the seat, this is illegal to use in racing anyway.

I have installed eyelets in the rear seatbelt mounts for my shoulder harnesses and bolted through the floor for my 5th strap (sub-belt).

Hope this helps, I have a pic or two of the BK setup, but MY advice would be to just order the setup...about $70 x 2 for both sides.

John, I just reread your original post and realized that you are changing seats.

In this case, just order the BK OUTER mounts and you will have to fenagle a way to mount your inboard belts...basically, a pain in the A** unless you decide to drill your tunnel and mount bolt-through eyelets.

Some have gone to putting the RS inboard seatbelt mount under the seat rails, but this raises that side up a bit and most can only get one bolt out of two to hold it.

I saw a C2 Turbo awhile back that had taken the RS mounts, cut the bracket in half and used the threaded part for the factory seatbelt mounting bolts and welded that to their seat tracks.

I will probably do this to get the factory seatbelts back in there, being that I am presently UNDER weight for PCA Club Race guidelines (so the extra weight won't hurt) and I drive the car to work a couple times a week.

Again, hope I have covered everything...lemme know if you have any particular questions/concerns, I feel confident in claiming that I've "been there, done that" with regards to harnesses in 911s.

With my Recaro sliders, I also received a mounting plate like the one pictured below (part #24). It sandwiches between the seat bracket and slider. To ensure level seating, the 3 other mounting points utilize a washer (part #27). The height is perfect for inboard seat belts. You should be able to pick up this part from Porsche, too, since it came on Speedster seats.

Yup, those are the two brackets I have...just haven't gotten around to installing them. Bill G. says you are only able to use one bolt to hold them but then I remember the double holes at the rear.

I really don't want to bring my seat up any more than it is as I'm 6ft. tall and my helmet tends to mess up the headliner.

I'm thinking I'll cut and weld the brackets to the sliders so I don't lose any helmet clearance!

I can't tell you if this is an appropriate solution from an engineering standpoint but this is how the problem was addressed in my car. The inboard seat belt latch is mounted to the rear bolt holding the seat to the seat bracket. The 5 point lap belt is attached to a tunnel-mounted eye bolt. The down side to this application is that the seat belt latch sits a little high which prevents the seat belt from really snugging down around the hips. The shoulder belt portion is fine. I usually end up uising the 5 point lap belts only in addition to the stock seat belt for street driving (sort of like belts and suspenders ).

I meant to attach this picture of my application, but being new to the forum boards, screwed it up. Here's the picture.

Darrell, when I had my Sparco Evo racing seats, that's EXACTLY what I did with the inboard seatbelt attachment...used one of the bolts to the seat bracket.

As mentioned before, I too, have the tunnel drilled for eyelets in order to snap the inboard harness strap into, seems the only way to do it when you have racing seats...unless the RS bracket is engineered into the picture.
