My 91 964 convertible top will only open half way. It unclamps from the header but then there is a grinding sound from behing passenger seat and it stops. There is now two small tears in the right side.

you need to check 2 areas - 1. Gear box on sides by upper seat belt anchor. The bolts holding these in place come loose and or the hearing has slipped. 2. The drive cables coming out of motors located middle lower area behind back panel - in line with center tunnel. The drive cables to gear boxes shrink with age/use.

Be careful and dont operate the top until you sort out whats wrong. If you bind the top to much the side part of the frame will snap in half and youll have to fork out $$$$ for a new one or have it welded back together.
