Wow - very nice - congratulations! Sounds like a great find. My car was perfect with respect to interior and the technical part and I still managed to spend $10k so far.

So a "simple" engine re-seal is ending up in a major overhaul "while we have it out" plus a new clutch.

Why the need for the overhaul? What were the leak down and compression numbers? Seems a bit early for a 92 engine. They usually go a long way without needing a full rebuild.

+1. What were your leakdown and compression numbers? Mine was consistent all around cold so it is reseal for me. My dizzy belt was broken. Chain guides worn at 51K miles.. go figure..

Guess I used the wrong nomenclature. At this point there is nothing wrong with the engine other than the requirement for the re-seal. Powder coating the tin while we are at it and replacing the clutch.

But the picture shows a full top end and what appears to be a bottom end as well based on the fresh Loctite 574 showing and freshly cleaned case. I am assuming you are having the valve guides replaced oil passages cleaned out and heads inspected while you are at it? Are they using new hardware or having the old re-plated. Is he having Pino paint the fan also?

Yes - all that is being done. I wasn't planning on repainting the fan. Good suggestion.

Thank you! My 2.0L race car. A labor of love - took me 2 years to squeeze 235hp out of it and to make it mechanically perfect:

964 Engine is almost ready for re-install.

Considering that I have now spent close to $30k on this car, it doesn't look like that good of a deal anymore.

Somebody spent a lot of time cleaning up the underside to mask the oil leaks and the paint meter readings posted for the auction were extremely "selective" but that's the risk you take buying sight unseen. Of course another buyer could have done a quick $6k re-seal plus a new clutch and sorted out the mechanicals for another $5k but that's just not me. It's a unique car without the sunroof and a beautifully preserved interior and it will be close to perfect when I'm done with it. Stay tuned!

Frank,

Who is rebuilding the engine?

That’s the spirit, and I’m glad someone like you got it, as you’ll take care of it. The good thing about these cars, once you take care of the major mechanicals, you are set for a long, long time. Major slick top envy here!

Boy, I can't wait to take the car for a drive. Gaswerks in NJ is rebuilding the engine. Gaspare's attention to detail is incredible. Engine goes back in tomorrow.
