Default First Service

Well I just picked my baby up from her first service with the local specialist.

All the little irritations are gone, rock steady tickover, stiffness in the throttle cable has gone, rear wing retracts without sounding like a bag of spanners! etc.

The one thing that surprised me was the state of the distributor belt. My mechanic gave me the option to change it or leave it so as having read the threads on the disasters this can cause I chose to have it done. I'm glad I did. The belt that came off had seriously seen better days.

He suggested a hybrid service as it's almost 2 years since she last had a 12k service but she's only done about 6K miles since.

All in £516 including the dreaded vat (£180 of that plus vat was for the ditributor refurb!).

Oh and I had her MOT'ed at the same time and she passed first time with no faults to rectify!

She's back and purring so I guess it's worth it

Regards

Adrian

Adrian,

Sounds like a very satisfying result. I must get my belt changed next time in, as it must have about 50k miles on it by now.

John,

As I said I was amazed at how worn the belt was. It was quite heavily frayed around the edges.

To site an example my specialist had a C2 Targa in that has just had a £3k engine rebuild due to failure of the belt, yet some of his customers would rather wait until it snaps and chance it to save £180 in the short term, not smart.

Ade - that sounds pretty reasonable, particularly if they attended to other things too. What's the hybrid service? Did the adjust valve clearances

On a slightly obtuse note, anyone know what the verdict is these days on whether changing the belt is a diy job?

Can I ask - who is your local specialist? I've just bought a '90 C4 and am looking for recommendations on where to take it for its next service.
