ac green wire shorts out

It's a hundred bazillion here in the SW and my AC isn't working.
Every time I hook up the green wire that goes to the compressor, it blows a fuse. If I don't hook up that wire, all of the blowers work just fine. And I swapped the oil cooler relay with the the AC clutch relay with no apparent effect. Does anyone out there have an idea what might be shorted? or what procedures I might try to find the short?
In addition to my ignorance, there was a couple of real problems: the rear relay was toasted, the rear blower motor was in need of replacement (none of which have to do with AC I finally found out) and one of my HVAC fans was frozen so every time I cranked up the fan speed to 4/5 the fuse blew.
